ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Emmanuel (Ga.) University Lions rallied from a 13-point deficit to knock off the No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men's basketball team at the Small College Basketball Champions Classic.
Northwest (2-2 overall) was unable to slow down last year's NCAA Div. II scoring leader in K.J. Jones as he poured in a game-high 30 points. Jones nailed 17-of-19 free throws in the triumph.
The Bearcats held a 13-point lead at 44-31 with 14:57 to play in the game. But the Lions would put up 50 points in the second half and score the three-point victory. Emmanuel buried 24-of-29 second-half free throws, but also went 12-of-19 from the field (63.2%).
Northwest buried 10 three-pointers, including four from
Mitch Mascari, three was
Wes Dreamer and two from
Bennett Stirtz. Dreamer put up a team-high 22 points, while Stirtz also notched 21 points. Mascari tallied a season-best 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Mascari made his first six shots of the contest, which included his first four three-point shots.
Northwest out-rebounded Emmanuel, 32-23. Northwest benefited from 10 offensive rebounds. Dreamer posted a double-double with 13 points to go along with his 22-point scoring output.
Northwest will be in action next Wednesday against Missouri-St. Louis in St. Louis, Mo., on the Maryville University campus.
