Bearcats down Hornets, 3-1

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team came away with a 3-1 win vs. the Emporia State Hornets Saturday afternoon inside Bearcat Arena. Junior Abby Brunssen led the Cats' with 15 kills while hitting .357.

Northwest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and didn't look back, winning the first set 25-21. Abby Brunssen had five first set kills on six swings while Freshman Gabrielle Gartner added four kills on five swings. Northwest hit .351 in the first set while holding the Hornets to .250.

Northwest took charge in the second set winning 25-19 led by Lauren Casey. Casey hit .571 tallying 4 kills on seven swings while Gabrille Gartner added four kills herself. Northwest held the Hornets to .125 hitting in set two tallying two blocks and 14 digs.

The Hornets took set three 25-13 hitting .360 and holding the Bearcats to .121. Olivia Dir notched three kills on seven swings for the Bearcats. Northwest had five service errors in set three and 14 total for the match.

Emporia State jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the fourth set forcing head coach Amy Woerth to burn a timeout. Northwest would answer with a 3-0 run themselves to get within one at 10-9. Northwest took the lead at 13-12 and never looked back thanks to an attack error by the Hornets, Northwest would gain their biggest lead of the set at 18-14 again on an attack error by the Hornets. The Bearcats had three different players with four kills in the set while hitting .250 as a team and holding the Hornets to .143 for the set. Emporia got within two at 21-19 but the Cats' answered with a 3-0 run to take a 24-19 lead and would ultimately finish off the match with a 25-21 set four win. 

Freshman Ella Caffery was credited with 46 assists and 10 digs for her sixth career double-double.

Kyah Luhring had a team best 12 digs. 

Avery Kemp added nine kills on 18 swings and four blocks.

Northwest returns to action at home Friday, November, 3rd at 6 p.m. vs. Nebraska-Kearney.
