EMPORIA, Kan. – Sophomore Reece Smith's MIAA-record setting performance in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase led the Northwest Missouri State University track & field teams on Saturday at the 2022 MIAA Outdoor Championships hosted by Emporia State University.

Through seven scored events, the Northwest women are in fourth place with 23 team points. The Bearcat men are in sixth place with 19 points.

Smith (Garner, Iowa) snapped a 38-year-old MIAA outdoor championships record in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase as he won the conference title with a time of 8:42.50. The old meet mark was 8:44.34 set by Southeast Missouri State's Mike Vanata in 1984. Smith's time also set a Fran Welch Stadium record (previous mark was 8:53.44 set by Vladimir Golias at the 1996 Twilight Qualifier).

Junior Jake Norris (Papillion, Neb.) placed fourth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to give Northwest a pair of top-four finishers in the race. Norris clocked an NCAA provisional time of 9:05.91, which also ranks fifth on Northwest's all-time outdoor list for the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Junior Caroline Cunningham (Cedar Falls, Iowa) registered a second-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase to give Northwest eight team points. Cunningham ran a time of 10:51.44) but was edged out by Fort Hays State's Gretchen Kuffel (10:47.30) for the MIAA title. Cunningham hit a barrier midway through the race and fell hard. She dropped to fourth place before battling her way back to second position. Cunningham was one of three runners in the race that produced NCAA provisional qualifying times. Cunningham still owns the nation's seventh-best qualifying time this season with a mark of 10:29.75 set at the Bryan Clay Invite in California on April 13.

Junior Ian Richmond secured a seventh-place finish in the men's pole vault to score two points for the Bearcat men's squad. Richmond landed a mark of 4.88m (16'0"), which improved his NCAA provisional mark. He also earned the seventh-best outdoor pole vault performance in program history.

Junior Randi Overkamp (Columbia, Mo.) and sophomore Kyah Luhring (Grundy Center, Iowa) produced personal-bests in the women's long jump. Overkamp placed third with a jump of 5.81m (19'0.75"), which ranks as the seventh-best mark in Northwest's outdoor history. Luhring secured seventh place with a leap of 5.60m (18'4.5"). Overkamp (6 pts.) and Luhring (2 pts.) combined to score eight points for the Bearcats in the women's team standings. Overkamp's jump of 5.81m was just off the NCAA provisional mark of 5.82m.

Senior Jacob Nkamasiai (Eldoret, Kenya) produced a seventh-place finish and two team points in the men's 10,000-meter race. Nkamasiai had a time of 30:53.95.

Junior Amber Owens (Lincoln, England) finished in seventh place in the women's 10,000-meter race with a time of 38:00.61. Owens added two team points with the seventh-place effort.

HEPTATHLON
Bearcat heptathlon competitors Anna Gladstone (Grant City, Mo.) and Shelby Butterfield (Topeka, Kan.) finished sixth and seventh with each posting personal records.

Gladstone notched 4,731 points in the heptathlon, besting her previous best of 4,601. Butterfield secured 4,367 points and broke her previous best total of 3,915.

Anna Gladstone leapt to a personal-best in the long jump (5.39m – 17'8.25"). Her jump, which was the third-best in the competition, landed her 668 event points. Gladstone notched the third-best throw in the javelin (32.87m – 107'10") to add 531 event points. Gladstone finished with a personal-best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.97 to give her 719 event points.

Shelby Butterfield notched a leap of 4.83m (15'10.25" in the long jump to add 514 event points. Butterfield got a big boost in the javelin with a personal-record throw of 33.66m (110'5" for the second-best mark in the competition. Butterfield's previous best in the javelin had been 31.51m. Butterfield added 546 event points in the javelin. Butterfield also finished strong with a personal-record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.05, besting her previous best time of 2:33.12.

Gladstone's point total of 4,731 ranks as the fifth-best heptathlon total in school history. It ranks No. 21 in the nation this season.

Sophomore Sarah Prickett (Overland Park, Kan.) notched the seventh-best qualifying time (14.03) in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Prickett will run the 100-meter hurdles final on Sunday at 2:40 p.m.

Junior R.J. Williams (New Albany, Ind.) flew around the track Saturday in the prelims of the men's 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 47.57. Williams tallied the seventh-best clocking in Northwest's outdoor history. His time Saturday ties for No. 24 in the nation this spring. Williams earned the second-best qualifying time for Sunday's final at 2:50 p.m.

Williams will be joined in the final by teammate sophomore Prince Griffin (Independence, Mo.). Griffin recorded the sixth-best qualifying time (47.96) in the 400-meter dash.

Freshman Enrico Cavagna (Trento, Italy) netted a 10.55 timing in the prelims of the men's 100-meter dash. Cavagna secured a personal-record and the fifth-best time in Northwest's outdoor history. Cavagna improved on his NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10.67 that he set at the Bryan Clay Invite in California earlier this spring. Cavagna netted the seventh-best qualifying time in the 100-meter dash and will compete in Sunday's final at 3:05 p.m.

Senior Marcus Klein (Harlan, Iowa) notched the eighth-fastest time in Bearcat outdoor history, but was unable to qualify for the finals. Klein posted a time of 10.64, which ranked as the 10th-best time in Saturday's MIAA prelims. Sophomore Aaron Brewster (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) secured a personal-record as he finished 13th in the 100-meter prelims with a time of 10.77.

Gilbert's time is second in program history to Hiba Mahgoub's record of 11.68 set last season. Gilbert notched the fifth-best qualifying time in Saturday's prelims.

Sophomore Ally Hammond (Parkville, Mo.) also qualified for the women's 100-meter final with a prelim time of 11.86, which is also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Hammond set a personal-record with a prelim time that ranked as the eighth-best qualifying mark on Saturday. Hammond's time of 11.86 ranks No. 6 on Northwest's all-time outdoor 100-meter performance list. Gilbert and Hammond will run in the women's 100-meter final Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

Harp notched a personal-record and an NCAA provisional qualifying time with her run in Saturday's prelims. Harp's previous career best coming into Saturday's action came on April 1 with a time of 2:12.69. Harp's mark on Saturday ranks No. 26 in the nation.
