The No. 21-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team earned the program's 22nd NCAA Division II Tournament appearance with an at-large selection in to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
The Bearcats (14-5 overall) captured the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Central Region rankings and will match up against the No. 13-ranked Southern Arkansas University Muleriders in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Northwest and SAU will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, in Magnolia, Ark.
SAU (19-5 overall) earned the No. 2 seed in the region. The Muleriders lost in the title match of the MIAA/GAC Tournament to Ouachita Baptist last weekend in Edmond, Okla.
The Bearcats and Muleriders have met two times this season with SAU scoring wins by the count of 7-0 and 4-2.
The winner of the Northwest-SAU match will advance to the NCAA Championships set for May 17-21 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Northwest is led by two-time MIAA Player of the Year
Andrea Zamurri. Zamurri is ranked No. 12 in the nation in the latest ITA individual rankings. Zamurri has gone 21-5 in singles play this season, including an impressive 16-2 mark in dual matches. Zamurri has also gone 13-8 in doubles play. Zamurri was a first-team All-MIAA pick in singles and an honorable mention selection in doubles.
Senior
Franco Oliva is ranked No. 31 in the nation in singles play. Oliva has tallied a singles record of 14-13, while posting doubles mark of 15-5. Oliva has recorded 67 career singles wins, which ranks tied for the 10th-best singles victories in program history. Oliva has also posted 57 career doubles triumphs.
Senior
Fabien Calloud brings a wealth of experience at No. 3 singles by having registered 58 career wins in singles and 58 more victories in doubles. Calloud is 19-4 in singles this season, while boasting of a 15-6 mark in doubles play. Oliva and Calloud earned first-team all-MIAA honors at No. 3 doubles.
Junior
Mason Meier has had a solid spring with a singles mark of 14-4 bouncing between No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Meier has added nine wins in doubles. Meier earned second-team All-MIAA status in singles play.
Sophomore
Simon Birgerson has tallied 12 singles wins on the year, including nine in dual play. Birgerson is 13-6 in doubles action. Birgerson earned second-team all-MIAA honors in singles.
Senior
Martin Sanchez earned honorable mention all-MIAA honors at No. 6 singles. Sanchez has gone 4-4 in dual action this spring with five total singles victories on the year.
Since taking over as Bearcat head coach in 1984,
Mark Rosewell has led Northwest tennis teams to 27 MIAA regular seasons championships (15 men, 12 women), 10 MIAA Tournament titles (nine men, one women) and 41 NCAA Tournament appearances (22 men, 19 women) in his tenure.
Rosewell has gone 574-268 in men's tennis at Northwest. Overall, Rosewell has tallied 1,193 total dual wins as a men's/women's head coach. Rosewell has 1,171 coaching victories in 38 seasons at Northwest. Rosewell recorded 22 wins at the University of Central Missouri to begin his coaching career.
This marks Northwest's second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2017 season. In NCAA play, Northwest has advanced 10 times past the regional round.
