Bearcats look to gain more NCAA qualifiers at last chance meets this week

The Northwest Missouri State University outdoor track and field teams will look to earn more NCAA provisional qualifying times this week with a trio of last chance meets. 

The Bearcats will send competitors to Naperville, Ill. (Carius/Gregory Invitational), Seward, Neb. (Concordia Twilight) and Kearney, Neb. (Loper Twilight) in hopes of earning more NCAA provisional marks. The 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for May 26-28 in Allendale, Mich., as Grand Valley State University will serve as the host.

The Bearcat outdoor track & field teams have combined to produce seven school records and 38 new spots on the top-10 performance lists in school history this spring.

Heading into this week's action, Northwest has combined to have produced 26 NCAA provisional qualifiers. The Bearcat women have 13 provisional qualifiers, while the Bearcat men also have 13 provisional marks/times.

Jake Norris will represent the Bearcats at the Carius/Gregory Invitational in Naperville, Ill., as he takes part in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7 p.m. Thursday on the North Central College campus.

The majority of the Bearcat roster will compete Friday at the Concordia Twilight in Seward, Neb., and will continue on Saturday to Kearney, Neb., to take part in the Loper Twilight.

MEN - NCAA PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS
Enrico Cavagna - 100 Meters
Enrico Cavagna blazed to the third-fastest time in program history with a 10.50 clocking in the men's 100-meter dash at the MIAA Championships. His time ranks No. 45 in the nation this spring.

R.J. Williams - 400 Meters
Williams ran the seventh-fastest time in school history with a 47.57 performance in the 400-meter dash at the MIAA Championships. He ranks No. 28 in the nation.

Prince Griffin - 400 Meters
Griffin earned an NCAA provisional qualifying time (47.77) in the men's 400-meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. His time ranks as the 11th-best in Northwest's men's outdoor history. His mark of 47.77 ranks as the 44th-best time in the country.
 
Reece Smith - 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
Smith has posted the third-best time (8:39.09) in the country this year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 12th-best mark all-time among NCAA Division II runners. It is the fastest recorded MIAA men's 3,000-steeplechase time in conference history. Smith ran his time at the 62nd Annual St. SAC Relays on April 14. Smith bested the previous Northwest outdoor school record set by Jim Ryan in 1983 (8:42.84). Smith's time in the Mt SAC Relays race was only bettered by BYU's Kenneth Rooks (8:32.75) and Montana State's Levi Taylor (8:38.90).
 
Jake Norris - 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
Norris ran the fourth-best time in school history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:05.91 at the MIAA Championships. It ranks as the 30th-best time in the nation this spring.
 
Reece Smith - 5,000 Meters
Smith notched a NCAA provisional qualifying time (13:57.62) in the 5,000-meter race at the Drake Relays on April 27. It ranks as the 14th-best time in the nation this season.
 
Blake Morgan - High Jump
Morgan secured an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men's high jump at the Southwest Baptist Invitational on April 1. Morgan tallied a leap of 6'11", which ranks as the 14th-best jump in the nation this season.
 
Ian Richmond – Pole Vault
Richmond produced an NCAA provisional qualifying jump in the pole vault at the MIAA Championships with a jump of 16'0". He ranks No. 31 in the nation. He has the seventh-best pole vault in school history.
 
Joel Dos Santos – Long Jump
Dos Santos ranks No. 20 in the country in the long jump. Dos Santos posted a jump of 7.40m (24'3.5") at the ESU Relays on March 24. His jump ranks as the ninth-best long jump in Northwest's men's outdoor history.
 
Marcus Klein - Long Jump
Klein earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump at the Southwest Baptist Invitational on April 1. Klein had a jump of 7.28m (23'10.75") in Bolivar, Mo. His jump is listed as the 38th-best leap in the country this season.
 
Dakota Schmidt – Javelin
Schmidt re-set his own school record in the javelin with a throw of 213'1" at the MIAA Championships. Schmidt's best throw this season ranks No. 11 in the country. He placed third in the javelin at the MIAA Championships.
 
4x100 Relay Team
The 4x100 relay team of Enrico Cavagna, Joel Dos Santos, Prince Griffin and Marcus Klein took down a 14-year-old outdoor school record at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., on April 16. The foursome breezed to a time of 40.78, bettering the old mark of 40.8 set by Kendall Wright, John Miles, Sheldon Cook and E.J. Falkner on May 10, 2008. The Bearcat 4x100 relay placed fourth in the meet, trailing only squads from North Texas (40.45), South Dakota (40.62) and Air Force (40.74). The time of 40.78 is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and ranks as the No. 35 time in Division II this season.

4x400 Relay Team
The 4x400 relay team of R.J. Williams, Federico Crisci, Gavyn Monday and Prince Griffin clocked the seventh-best time in outdoor program history with a time of 3:12.25 at the MIAA Championships. The time ranks No. 22 in the country.
 
WOMEN - NCAA PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS
Lexie Gilbert - 100 Meters
Gilbert ran an 11.77 in the prelims of the women's 100-meter dash as the MIAA Championships in Emporia, Kan. It is the second-fastest time in Bearcat history. It ranks No. 31 in the nation this spring. 

Ally Hammond - 100 Meters
Hammond clocked the sixth-fastest women's 100-meter time in Bearcat history with an 11.86 clocking in the prelims at the MIAA Championships. Hammond's time ranks No. 51 in the country.

Chloe Saenz - 400 Meters
Saenz boosted her provisional qualifying time to 54.73 in the prelims of the women's 400-meter dash at the MIAA Championships. Saenz's time ranks No. 4 on Northwest's all-time list. She ranks No. 13 in the nation this spring.

Kaylee Harp - 800 Meters
Harp secured the No. 20-ranked time in the country in the women's 800-meter race at the MIAA Championships. Harp blazed the 800 in 2:09.81 to rank as the second-best time in school history. Harp placed fourth overall at the MIAA Championships.
 
Bailey Blake - 800 Meters
Blake posted a time of 2:10.53 in the women's 800-meter race at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California on April 14. Blake's time ranks No. 30 in the nation. It ranks as the third-fastest time in Bearcat outdoor history.
 
Caroline Cunningham - 1,500 Meters
Cunningham set the Northwest outdoor women's record (4:29.71) in the 1,500-meter at the Mt SAC Relays on April 15. Her time ranks as the 37th-best time in the country this year.
 
Caroline Cunningham - 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
Cunningham also set the outdoor women's school record (10:29.75) the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 13. It ranks as the seventh-best time in NCAA Division II this spring. It is the top-time in the MIAA and the Central Region this season.
 
Caroline Cunningham - 5,000 Meters
Cunningham continued her assault on the Northwest women's outdoor record book by taking down the 5,000-meter mark at the Drake Relays. She recorded a time of 16:54.94 in the unseeded 5,000 meters to move past Angela Adams' old mark of 16:55.80 set May 13, 2010 at the North Central Invitational in Naperville, Ill. It marks the third outdoor distance school record that Cunningham has broken this spring. She owns the school marks in the 1,500m (4:29.71), 3,000m steeplechase (10:29.75) and 5,000m (16:54.94). Cunningham's time in the 5,000 meters ranks No. 32 in the nation.

Sarah Prickett - 100-Meter Hurdles
Prickett set the Northwest's women's outdoor school record and produced an NCAA provisional qualifying time (13.90) in the women's 100-meter hurdles at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. Her time of 13.90 ranks as the 16th-best time in the nation.
 
Josie Zeiger - Javelin
Zeiger earned an NCAA provisional mark in the women's javelin with a toss of 139'6.5" in winning the event title at the Cal State LA Twilight Open on April 13. Zeiger's toss ranks No. 5 in Northwest women's outdoor history. It ranks No. 34 in the nation.
 
Anna Gladstone - Heptathlon
Gladstone notched an NCAA provisional mark with 4,731 points in the women's heptathlon at the MIAA Championships. Her 4,731-point effort ranks No. 23 in the nation.

4x100 Relay
The 4x100 relay team of Chloe Saenz, Lexie Gilbert, Kyah Luhring and Ally Hammond ran the second-best time in Bearcat outdoor history with a time of 46.62 at the MIAA Championships. The time ranks No. 32 in the nation this spring.

4x400 Relay
The 4x400 relay team of Bailey Blake, Chloe Saenz, Haley Luna and Kaylee Harp tallied the second-fastest time in school history with a clocking of 3:44.69 at the MIAA Championships. The time ranks No. 12 in the nation.

The Northwest men are ranked No. 9 in the USTFCCCA's Central Region index. The men are ranked No. 31 in the USTFCCCA's national index.
