MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team topped the No. 14-ranked Washburn University Ichabods on the Grube Courts at the Rosewell Tennis Center, 6-1.
Northwest (11-4 overall, 4-2 MIAA/GAC) handed Washburn (14-4 overall, 4-2 MIAA/GAC) only its fourth dual loss of the season.
Northwest had to battle back after dropping the doubles point to Washburn. Northwest looked to be in good shape when
Andrea Zamurri and
Fillippo Piranomonte stopped Washburn's No. 24-ranked doubles team of Sebastian Pjontek and Matthew Earle, 7-5.
However, Washburn scored a win at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 doubles match went to a seven-point tiebreaker. Washburn's Santiago Rendon and Miquel Perez posted a 7-6 (7-3) win over Northwest's
Mason Meier and
Simon Birgerson to give the Ichabods a 1-0 lead.
Head coach
Mark Rosewell's squad then went out and simply took care of business in singles play. The Bearcats jumped all over the Ichabods by winning all six singles matches.
No. 12-ranked
Andrea Zamurri took down No. 44-ranked Raul-Alin Dicu at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
No. 32-ranked
Franco Oliva won a tussle at No. 2 singles with No. 30-ranked Tim Hammes, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
Fabien Calloud kept the train rolling with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Perez at No. 3 singles.
Mason Meier scored the clinching singles victory with a 6-1, 6-3 dismissal of Washburn's Sebastian Pjontek, 6-1, 6-3.
Simon Birgerson disposed of Santiago Rendon at No. 5 singles in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-4.
Fillippo Pironomonte also went to a third-set super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles with Washburn's Daniel Bird. Pironomonte won the super tiebreaker, 10-6.
