Bearcats sweep Hawks in damp doubleheader

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Rockhurst University Hawks on a damp Tuesday afternoon at Bearcat Field.

Northwest took the opener, 13-7, and came through in the nightcap, 10-8. Northwest is 13-20 on the year, while Rockhurst is 12-16 overall.

GAME ONE
Northwest used a pair of three-run home runs in a seven-run third inning to bolster its efforts in a 13-7 victory.

The Hawks struck first with two runs in their initial at bat. Donovan Warren put the 'Cats on the board in the bottom half of the first with an RBI groundout that scored Pinkerton, who had led off with a single.

Rockhurst tallied a run on an RBI groundout in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Pinkerton plated Jordan Peck on a sacrifice fly to center after the first three Bearcats had reached base to begin the second inning. Drew Mackie delivered an RBI single to left to even the contest at 3-3.

Rockhurst tallied another single run in the top of the third to retake the lead, 4-3.

After a Ryan Koski strikeout to begin the bottom of the third, Northwest's next five batters recorded hits to chase Rockhurst starter CJ July from the game. Ryan Williams began the assault with a single and scored on an RBI double by Jordan Peck. Ethan Judd singled to move Peck to third before Jake Emhardt unloaded with his first career home run. Emhardt's three-run blast gave Northwest a 7-4 lead. Pinkerton doubled for his second hit of the game. Brett Holden drew a walk and Drew Mackie grounded out for the second out of the inning. Warren crushed a three-run bomb to left for his fourth home run of the season. Warren's round-tripper put Northwest on top, 10-4.

Rockhurst scored on a sac fly in the fourth to finish the day's line on Bearcat starter Jonny McIntyre. McIntyre pitched into the fourth inning and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Holden scored Northwest's 11th run of the game when Warren reached on an error in the fifth. Warren would work his way around the bases and score on a wild pitch to take the Bearcat advantage to 12-5.

Rockhurst posted two runs (one earned) off Kade Barrick in the sixth to complete the Hawks's scoring.

Pinkerton produced his third hit of the opener with an RBI double down the left field line to score Jordan Peck to finish the scoring at 13-7.

Pinkerton went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Warren went 1-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Jordan Peck made his fifth start of the season and went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Ethan Judd went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Josh Mitchell got the win as he came in in the fourth in relief of McIntyre. Mitchell struck out one and did not allow a hit.

Northwest out-hit Rockhurst, 11-8. Rockhurst committed six errors, while Northwest made three errors.

GAME TWO
Northwest reached double figures in runs for the sixth time this season as the Bearcats completed a sweep of the Rockhurst Hawks, 10-8.

Northwest bounced out to a three-run advantage in the first. Pinkerton reached on an error and moved up to second on a sac bunt from Holden. Mackie was hit by a pitch that was followed by an RBI double to left from Warren. Koski laced a two-run double down the left field line to stake the Bearcats to a 3-0 lead.

Rockhurst answered back with a three-spot in the top of the second off second-game starter Brandin Hallier.

Ryan Williams clubbed his second home run of the season with a two-run shot to give Northwest a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third. Holden came through with a two-out RBI single to left to push the advantage to 7-3.

The Hawks posted two more runs in the top of the fourth to end Hallier's day after 3 2/3 innings pitched. Hallier allowed six hits and five runs (all earned), while striking out three Rockhurst batters.

Head coach Darin Loe called on Colin Shreves to extinguish the Rockhurst rally in the fourth. 

Northwest tacked on two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Peck and Caden Diel to give Northwest a 9-5 lead.

Peck chipped in with another RBi single in the fifth that left the Bearcats on top, 10-5.

Rockhurst put up two runs in the sixth to pull within 10-7.

Loe turned to closer Jacob Gajic in the seventh. Gajic walked the high wire as he allowed three hits and a walk as the Hawks climbed to within 10-8 with two runners on and two out. Gajic got the final out with a strikeout to secure his fourth save of the season. 

Shreves got the victory to move to 1-0 on the year. Shreves worked 2 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed three hits and two runs (both earned) with two strikeouts.

Koski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Peck went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Diel went 2-for-2. Holden knocked in two runs. Mackie scored two runs.

Northwest will be in action this Friday-Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo., against Missouri Western. Friday's action will get underway at 4 p.m.

NOTES: Koski has reached base in 17 straight games ... Koski leads the team with eight multi-RBI games ... Ryan Williams possesses the longest hitting streak on the squad at four ... Warren leads the team in batting (.325) and RBI (33) ... Mackie and Cole Slibowski are tied for the team lead with six stolen bases.
