EDMOND, Okla. - The No. 12-ranked Southern Arkansas University Muleriders scored a 4-2 dual victory over the No. 21-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team in the semifinals of the 2022 MIAA/GAC Men's Tennis Tournament.
The Muleriders moved their season mark to 19-4 overall, while snapping Northwest's eight-match win streak. The Bearcats dropped to 14-5 on the season.
SAU got a boost early on by taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Its No. 1 doubles team of Sander Jans and Marko Nikoliuk, ranked No. 9 among NCAA Division II doubles teams, scored a 6-3 win over Northwest's pairing of
Fillippo Piranomonte and
Andrea Zamurri. SAU's No. 2 doubles duo of Sofiane Bah and Stuart Rehuff also tallied a 6-3 win over Northwest's
Mason Meier and
Simon Birgerson. The two doubles victories gave SAU a 1-0 lead in the dual.
Northwest needed to win four of the six singles matches to rebound and take the victory, But it was not to be as the Muleriders were the ones to capture four singles triumphs.
Northwest's only two singles wins came from No. 12-ranked
Andrea Zamurri as he dispatched No. 63-ranked Sander Jans in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-1) at No. 1 singles and
Fabien Calloud over SAU's No. 19-ranked Marko Nikoliuk (4-6, 6-0, 7-5) at No. 3 singles.
