Spitzmiller slays Tigers with 10-strikeout performance

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Junior right-hander Max Spitzmiller slayed the Fort Hays Tigers with a five-hit, 10-strikeout performance in leading the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team to a 6-1 victory at Bearcat Field.

Spitzmiller logged his sixth complete game of the season. Spitzmiller did not walk a batter.

Northwest improved to 16-25 overall and 10-18 in MIAA play. FHSU dropped to 4-36 and 3-25 in conference action.

Jacob Pinkerton got Northwest on the board as he scored on an error to give Northwest a 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Brett Holden recorded an RBI as he singled to right center to score Tyler Peters. Northwest found themselves up 2-0 after two innings.

Hays scored their one and only run in the fourth inning.

It was all Northwest from then on. In the sixth, Ryan Koski found himself in a pickle between third and home, but a dropped ball allowed him to reach home, giving Northwest their third run of the day. Later in the inning, Jake Emhardt recorded an RBI with a double to left center.

Donovan Warren tripled to center field, scoring Drew Mackie and recording an RBI. Two batters later Caden Diel recorded an RBI with a single to center field to score Warren.

Northwest will honor 10 seniors prior to tomorrow's game vs. Fort Hays State. Sunday's game will begin at 3 p.m. It was originally set for 1 p.m., but rain after today's game forced the changed to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

NOTES: Northwest got two-hit games from Jacob Pinkerton, Brett Holden, Donovan Warren and Tyler Peters ... Northwest out-hit FHSU, 12-5 ... Northwest received extra-base hits from Ryan Koski (double), Jake Emhardt (double) and Donovan Warren (triple) ... Warren leads the team with 15 multi-hit games ... Holden has recorded 13 multi-hit games ... Pinkerton has registered 11 multi-hit contests ... Tyler Peters notched his fourth multi-hit game ... Holden has reached base in 16 consecutive games.
