MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team held the Northeastern State University RiverHawks to two hits in a 3-1 victory at Bearcat Field.
The RiverHawks came into Sunday's contest hitting .333 as a team. A trio of Bearcat pitchers combined to stymie the NSU offense. The RiverHawks managed two hits in 28 at-bats in the loss.
Starter
Zach Wiese worked into the seventh inning as he allowed two hits and one run. Wiese struck out six and walked four.
Josh Mitchell came on in relief of Wiese with two-on and two-out in the seventh. Mitchell allowed a walk before inducing a groundout to shortstop
Jacob Pinkerton to end the NSU scoring threat.
Jacob Gajic retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings to record his third save of the season. Gajic struck out two, forced three groundouts and one flyout.
The Bearcat offense took care of its scoring in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan Koski drew a one-out walk and moved up to second on a wild pitch.
Ryan Williams worked a walk to put runners on first and second.
Caden Diel reached on an infield single to load the bases.
Cole Slibowski reached on an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1. Pinkerton bounced into a fielder's choice that scored Williams for the go-ahead run.
Brett Holden finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBi single to plate Diel and give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead.
Holden had a three-hit day as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Holden accounted for half of the Bearcat hits.
Northwest (8-18 overall, 4-11 MIAA) and NSU (17-11 overall, 7-8 MIAA) will wrap up the three-game series Monday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the Bearcat Baseball Field.
