MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University softball team picked up its second win of the season with a 9-1, five-inning triumph over the visiting Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs at the Bearcat Softball Field.
Northwest improved to 2-9 on the year as it tagged Duluth with its first loss in six games.
Hayden Simmons limited the Bulldogs to four hits and one run in a complete game victory. Simmons struck out six and walked none. Simmons moved her season mark to 1-3.
Duluth scored its lone run of the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the first.
Northwest put up a four-spot in its half of the first.
Olivia Daugherty drove in
Hannah Blackford with a single to even the contest at 1-1. Later in the first,
Aubrey Griffith hammered a three-run home run to left center to give Northwest a 4-1 cushion.
Lauren Gray used the long ball to push Northwest's lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third. Gray homered to left center to score Griffth.
Griffth tallied another RBI in the fourth as she brought home
Jacee Winn. Gray did more damage later in the fourth with a two-run double that scored Griffth and
Brylee Kemper.
Simmons worked around a single and a hit by pitch in the fifth to retire the Bulldogs and secure the 9-1 victory.
Northwest will be at home again Monday at 11 a.m. vs. Minnesota-Duluth, followed by a 3 p.m. matchup with No. 6-ranked Minnesota State.
