MARYVILLE, Mo. - The No. 11-ranked Northwest Missouri State University football team posted a 27-5 Senior Day victory over the visiting Missouri Southern Lions Saturday at Bearcat Stadium.
Northwest rushed for 201 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. It marks the third time this season that Northwest has not allowed the opposition to score a touchdown.
Northwest extended the longest active home winning streak among NCAA Div. II schools to 18 in a row.
The Bearcats defeated the Lions for the 27th straight time. Northwest leads the all-time series, 29-4.
Northwest had to climb out of a 2-0 hole after Missouri Southern stuffed Bearcat quarterback
Mike Hohensee in the end zone on the first offensive drive of the game for the home squad. The Lions led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Northwest took the lead for good on the first play of the second quarter. Hohensee scored on a two-yard run with 14:56 to play in the half. The Hohensee touchdown capped an eight-play, 51-yard drive.
MSSU took advantage of a Northwest fumble by
Kashan Griffin to put more points on the board. The Lions recovered the loose ball at the 32-yard line. The Lions ran seven plays for 10 yards and had to settle for a 39-yard field goal from Nick Williams with 8:59 left until halftime.
Neither team would score for the remainder of the half and Northwest took a 7-5 advantage to the break.
Northwest sophomore
Jadon Brady broke through for a 52-yard touchdown run that gave the Bearcats a two-score lead with 12:51 left in the third quarter. Brady's score capped a five-play, 81-yard drive and gave Northwest a 14-5 lead.
Senior
Jamar Moya capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive with a three-yard rushing score with 2:11 left in the third quarter to extend the Northwest lead to 21-5.
Freshman
Jay Harris capped the scoring on the day with a one-yard plunge with 3:39 remaining in the contest. Harris tallied his fifth rushing score of the season to push the Northwest lead to 27-5.Â
Isaac Vollstedt and
Shane Fredrickson led the way defensively with eight tackles each.
Jake Fisher notched 1.5 quarterback sacks.
Zach Howard was credited with 1/2 a sack.
Northwest will wrap its regular season next Saturday at Emporia State.
