Bearcats claim five event titles at Jayhawk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Northwest Missouri State University indoor track & field teams combined to capture five event titles at the 2022 Jayhawk Classic at the Anschutz Sports Pavilion.
 
Reece Smith took first-place honors in the men's 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:25.41 (converts to 8:19.60). Smith breezed to victory as he won the race by more than 23 seconds.
 
Amber Owens followed Smith's lead and captured the title in the women's 3,000-meter run. Owens covered the distance in 10:20.52.
 
Northwest went 1-2-3 in the men's 400-meter dash with Prince Griffin taking home top honors. Griffin topped the six-man race with a time of :49.55. Griffin edged out teammates R.J. Williams, who placed second with a time of :49.78, and Federico Crisci, who took third with a time of :49.97.
 
The Bearcat women went 1-2 in the women's 400-meter dash. Luisarys Toledo was the cream of the crop in the field with a time of :55.75 (converts to 55:02. Teammate Chloe Saenz took second with a personal-best clocking of :57.03 (converts to :56.29). Tiffany Hughey notched fifth in the 400m with a time of :57.67.
 
David Hipshire was crowned the shot put champion with a season-best toss of 13.78m (45'2.5"). Hipshire earned that mark on his first toss as he committed fouls on his next five throws, but it was enough to win the competition.
 
In the 60-meter hurdle event final, Sarah Prickett ran 8.84. Prickett qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a prelim time of 9.01 in Friday's morning session.
 
Joel Dos Santos placed third in the 60-meter dash final with a time of 6.89, while Enrico Cavagna placed seventh (7.01). Dos Santos posted the top qualifying time in the 60-meter dash prelims with a clocking of 6.90. Cavagna qualified for the finals with the fifth-best prelim time of 7.04.
 
Tucker Dahle notched a second-place effort in the men's 800m run. Dahle covered the 800m distance in a time of 1:58.24 as he edged out Kansas's Matt Harding (1:58.32) for second. Oral Roberts's Aden Baughman won the 800 with a time of 1:55.43.
 
Kaylee Harp ran the seventh-fastest women's indoor 800m time in program history with a clocking of 2:15.93 (converts to 2:14.38). Harp placed third in the 800 behind only Oral Roberts's Adrena Mazzei (2:14.61) and Kansas's Faten Laribi (2:14.92). Harp's previous best in the 800m came with a 2:18.04 time on Feb. 19, 2021 at the Friday Night Last Chance meet held at the Hughes Fieldhouse.
 
Lexie Gilbert placed third in the women's 200m dash with a time of :26.23.
 
Quinn Weakley earned second-place honors in the women's shot put with a toss of 12.64m (41'5.75").
 
Jada Shanklin also placed second in the women's high jump. Shanklin cleared three heights in the competition at 1.65m, 1.70m and 1.75m (5'8.75").
 
The women's 4x400 relay team of Chloe Saenz, Tiffany Hughey, Jaedy Commins and Luisarys Toledo wrapped up the competition with a blazing second-place finish in a time of 3:47.64 for the second-fastest clocking in the program's indoor history. The Kansas "A" squad won the event with a time of 3:47.29 – edging out the Bearcat quartet by 35-hundredths of a second. Toledo ran the final 400 leg in an incredible time of :54.931 to push past Lincoln for second place. The Bearcat time is converted to 3:44.66, which ranks as the second-best time in the nation this year.
