The Northwest Missouri State Bearcat softball team battled MIAA No. 1-seed Central Oklahoma, but came up just short in the quarterfinal round. The Bronchos won the first game in the best-of-three series in walk off fashion with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning before taking the second game in a 2-0 shutout.Â
GAME ONE
A sacrifice fly gave UCO a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, the only run that would be scored through the first five innings of play. In the top of the sixth, the Bearcats would take a 2-1 lead off a
Madison Friest two-run home run to center field that scored
Kaitlyn Weis. After holding the Bronchos in the bottom of the sixth, Northwest was just three outs away from taking game one from the top-seeded Bronchos. But with one out, UCO's Allie Eicher homered to left center, scoring pinch runner Shayleigh Odom.Â
Weis,
Abby Nolte, and
Grace Ruehle each had two hits whileÂ
Breck Dickey took the loss in the circle.Â
GAME TWO
Needing to secure a win to keep their season alive, the Bearcats looked to game two to extend the series. But UCO's Kylie Lynch (17-3) would take control on the mound and pitch a complete game shutout, striking out three and walking just one batter.Â
Raven Defrain took the loss in the circle while Friest,
Hannah Blackford, and
Jacee Winn were the only Bearcats to record hits.Â
The Bearcats finish their season with an 18-22 mark and 12-14 in MIAA play.Â
