Bearcat baseball rings up two victories over Griffons

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat baseball team rang up a pair of wins in sweeping a Friday doubleheader of the Missouri Western State University Griffons.

The Bearcats won game one, 6-4, and took care of business in game two, 8-4.

GAME ONE
The Bearcat bullpen of Phil Brenneman, Tanner Smith and Alex Slocum kept the Griffons in check when starter Max Spitzmiller left the contest after pitching only one inning.

Brenneman (1-1) captured the win going 4 2/3 innings and allowing only two earned runs. Smith worked 2 2/3 and did not give up a hit, while Slocum got the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.

Jacob Pinkerton went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the leadoff spot as he extended his games on base streak to 12 in a row. He led off the bottom of the first with a single and moved to second on a walk by Drew Mackie. Connor Quick cleared the bases with a two-run double to give Northwest a 2-1 advantage.

Northwest put up a three spot in the second as the first four batters reached base. Peter Carlson beat a throw home on a fielder's choice from Caden Diel to start the Bearcat scoring in the second. Ethan Judd, who had doubled, scored on a double-play groundout by Brett Holden. Mackie smacked a two-out, RBI double to plate Diel to stake Northwest to a 5-1 lead.

The Griffons got one back in the top of the third on a pair of two-out hits to pull within 5-3.

Pinkerton lifted a sac fly to center in the fourth to score Judd. Judd got into scoring position with his second double of the contest.

The Griffons final run came on an error by Trevor Dooley with two outs in the ninth. Slocum recovered and got the final Griffon to pop out to end it.

GAME TWO
The Bearcats reached double figures in hits for the eighth time this season with a 10-hit attack in the 8-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Griffons gained the upper hand early on the benefit of a pair of errors by Bearcat third baseman Colton Thomas in the top of the second.

Thomas would atone for his defensive miscues with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Northwest got on the board in the second with runners on the corners. Missouri Western starter Jacob Weirich tossed a wild pitch with runners on the corners and Griffon catcher Reid Briney attempted to fake a throw to second to try and cut down Ryan Koski, but the ball slipped out of his hands and ended up near shortstop with no one around it. Tyler Peters scooted home without a throw for the first run of the game. Thomas delivered an RBI single to plate Koski and the Bearcats had evened it at 2-2.

The Bearcats appeared to get the scorebook stuck on two as the home team would score two runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to open up an 8-3 lead.

Connor Quick and Koski were credited with RBIs in the third. Brett Holden and Mackie each delivered RBIs in the fourth. Caden Diel drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fifth. Koski stole home on a failed pick-off move at first that saw Diel swipie second.

The Griffons added a sac fly in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Bearcat starter Zach Wiese (2-2) went six innings and allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned). Blaine Hanf worked his seventh straight game without allowing a run as he went two innings and struck out three. Slocum took over in the ninth and struck out one while allowing a two-out single.

Northwest and Missouri Western will wrap up the three-game set Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. at the Bearcat Baseball Field.

NOTES: Koski went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBi in the second game ... Koski is in the midst of a six-game hitting streak ... Thomas went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the second game ... Koski has nine multi-hit games this season ... it was Thomas' first multi-hit game of the season ... Northwest has turned 20 double plays this year.
