Late rallies not enough for Bearcats, tally two losses to Griffons

The Northwest Missouri State softball team overcame an 8-3 deficit against Missouri Western in the seventh inning, but eventually fell 10-9 in extra innings.

Olivia Daugherty hit a two-run home run in the third inning, scoring Jacee Winn as well for two RBI. The Griffons rallied back with six runs in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, Regan Kirby singled to score Madison Friest and pull within 6-3. But Missouri Western would again answer with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 8-3.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Bearcats mounted a monster rally in the seventh inning. Daugherty singled in the frame, scoring Grace Jeffries and Hannah Blackford scored on a Griffon error. Kaitlyn Weis' sacrifice fly scored Winn, then Daugherty scored on Friest's double to left center. Friest ended up scoring on Alexis Kump's single to tie the game, 8-8, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Griffons could not answer in the seventh, so the game moved to extra innings.

Daugherty hit her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left field, to regain the lead at 9-8. But the Griffons would answer this time, with an RBI triple from Brea Blanton. Blanton would go on to score on an error by pitcher Kaitlyn Weis and win the game 10-9 in eight innings.

Daugherty led the Bearcats, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, three runs scored, and four RBI. Friest was also 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Kaitlyn Weis took the loss in the circle, dropping to 1-2 on the season.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Bearcats and Griffons were knotted at one run apiece until the Griffons plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Northwest again tried to rally their way back into the game by scoring two runs, but the Griffons pieced together three outs to end the threat and pick up the 4-3 win.

Seven Bearcats chipped in hits while Daugherty, Abby Nolte, and Raven Defrain tallied RBIs. Defrain took the loss in the circle and dropped to 3-4 on the season.
