Hornets take series from Bearcats with Sunday triumph

MARYVILLE, Missouri - Emporia State University scored an 11-3 victory over the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team in the rubber game of a three-game set at the Bearcat Baseball Field.

The Hornets scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Northwest's Connor Quick connected on his ninth career home run with a two-out solo shot to left-center to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first.

The Bearcats evened it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the second with an unearned run of their own. Jacob Pinkerton reached on an error and Chase Broeker was able to score from second.

The Hornets took a 3-2 lead on a two-out double in the fifth by ESU's Brady Michel.

ESU took advantage of three Northwest relievers in the seventh for a six-run inning and a 9-2 lead.

The Hornets tacked on two more in the eighth to push the margin to 11-2.

Northwest's Peter Carlson singled to begin the ninth, only the second time in the game that the first batter in an inning got on base for the Bearcats. Carlson moved to second on a stolen base and scored on pinch hitter Tyler Peters's double down the left field line.

Northwest is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA, while Emporia State is 5-6 overall and 2-4 in league play.

The Bearcats are scheduled to play a three-game set at home Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday (single game) against the Rogers State Hillcats.

NOTES: Northwest starter Zach Wiese pitched five innings and gave up seven hits and three runs (only one earned), while he struck out four ... the Bearcats tallied seven hits on Sunday after only posting three total hits in two games Saturday against the Hornets ... Quick extended his hitting streak to six in a row ... Quick leads the team with a .382 batting average and a .559 slugging percentage.
