Baseball set for a four-game week in Kansas

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team (6-9 overall, 5-7 MIAA) will travel to Washburn (6-10 overall) in a mid-week non-conference game before traveling to Newman University (3-8 overall, 2-7 MIAA) for a three-game set beginning with a single game on Friday.

Northwest will look to bounce back after dropping three home games in a series with Pittsburg State. The Bearcats have turned an MIAA-best 17 double plays this season.
 
Northwest leads the all-time series vs. Washburn, 65-59. The Bearcats have won six of the last seven matchups with the Ichabods. Northwest and Washburn will meet again in Maryville to close the regular season with a three-game MIAA series on May 7-8.
 
Newman and Northwest have met twice previously on the diamond with both games occurring in the 2011 season. Newman won the first matchup, 6-4, on March 1, 2011, in Wichita. Northwest posted a 19-6 win over the Jets in Maryville on March 23, 2011.
 
Junior Spencer Hanson leads the MIAA in opponents' batting average (.130). Hanson's 2.56 ERA ranks seventh in the MIAA. He is 2-1 with 26 strikeouts in five starts.
 
Freshman Zach Wiese is 1-2 in three starts with a 3.96 ERA. Wiese has logged 25 innings in five appearances with 14 strikeouts.
 
Junior Max Spitzmiller has pitched a team-high 32 innings and leads the squad with 35 strikeouts. Spitzmiller ranks third in the MIAA in innings pitched. His 35 strikeouts is tied for the fifth-best in the league.
 
Sophomore Alex Slocum is tied for second in the MIAA in saves (3). Slocum leads the Bearcats with nine appearances. He has pitched 12 innings with a 6.75 ERA.
 
Junior Blaine Hanf has a 2.25 ERA in MIAA games. Hanf has pitched in six league games and has allowed only two hits and one earned run in four innings pitched. Hanf has not allowed a run in five straight appearances entering this week's play.
 
Sophomore left fielder Ryan Koski leads the Bearcats in batting average (.316), hits (18), multi-hit games (7), slugging percentage (.439) and stolen bases (2). Koski has recorded a hit in 11 games.
 
Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Peters is on a seven-game hitting streak. In those seven games, Peters is hitting .381. Overall, Peters is batting .320 this season. Peters is batting .333 in MIAA action with eight hits in 24 at bats.
 
Sophomore center fielder Drew Mackie has scored a team-best 10 runs. Mackie has reached base in six straight games entering this week's action.
 
Junior right fielder Donovan Warren is tops on the squad in outfield assists (3).
 
Bearcat skipper Darin Loe has posted 688 career victories. He is closing in on 700 victories. There are currently 26 active NCAA Division II head coaches with at least 700 wins. Loe is Northwest's all-time wins leader with 532. Loe is one of five head coaches all-time to reach 500 wins in the MIAA.
