BEARCATS GEAR UP FOR MATCHUPS WITH GORILLAS, LIONS IN BEARCAT ARENA
The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team prepares for two more conference tests this week on its home court. On Thursday, the Bearcats meet Pittsburg State who they previously dropped an 80-50 contest after going nearly three weeks without a game.
Â
On Saturday, Northwest hosts Missouri Southern after traveling to Joplin last week. The Bearcats scored a win over the Lions for the first time since Feb. 17, 2018 behind 19 points from
Molly Hartnett and 18 points from
Jaelyn Haggard off the bench.
ABOUT THE GORILLAS (11-6)
Junior guard Tristan Gegg leads the Gorillas with 17.5 ppg on 39.5 percent shooting from the floor. Gegg has also gone 68-for-75 (90.7%) from the free throw line, which ranks as the 13th best percentage in NCAA Division II. Junior guard Kaylee DaMitz has also had a solid season so far with 16.6 ppg, 96 assists (2nd MIAA), and 33 steals (5th MIAA). Senior forward Maya Williams is just shy of averaging double digits offensively, tallying 9.9 ppg while pulling down 5.2 rpg.
Â
LAST TIME VS. PITTSBURG STATE
While the Bearcats came in cold after three weeks off due to COVID-19-related pauses and winter break, the Gorillas could not have asked for a hotter start to 2021. The Gorillas shot 56.1 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point land, both several percentage points higher than their season averages.
Â
Historically, the Bearcats have struggled against Pittsburg State, as the Gorillas own the last 15 victories over Northwest. However, the Bearcats will look to carry momentum after knocking off Missouri Southern for the first time in nearly three years, while also recently completing a season sweep of Missouri Western, something that has not happened in ten years.
Mallory McConkey scored a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) against the Griffons while
Molly Hartnett tallied a career-high six assists.
Caely Kesten has also dished out five assists in each of the last two games.
LAST TIME VS. MISSOURI SOUTHERN
The Bearcats scored their first win over the Lions in dominating fashion with a 63-46 win in Joplin. The 17-point margin of victory was the highest since a 70-51 win at home on Jan. 10, 2004.
Â
Hartnett and Haggard combined for 37 points in the victory while
Mia Stillman tied her career-high with 11 points with three 3-pointers. Hartnett led the team with nine rebounds while
Mallory McConkey chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.
