BEARCATS BACK ON THE ROAD FOR MISSOURI SOUTHERN MATCH UP
The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team hits the road again for Tuesday's game at Missouri Southern in Joplin, Missouri. The Bearcats are 25-34 all time against the Lions, going 8-19 in Joplin.
The last Bearcat win in the series dates back to Feb. 17, 2018 in a 79-73 home contest. The last time the Bearcats won in Joplin was on March 5, 2013, 77-72. Northwest has dropped the last three contests and 12 of the last 13 match ups against Missouri Southern.
ABOUT THE LIONS (6-8)
The Lions' leading scorers may have changed from a season ago, but that does not mean they are lacking offensively. Now leading the pack is senior Carley Turnbull, a transfer from Monmouth College (Illinois). Turnbull currently averages 14.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg to go along with 24 assists and 14 steals. Sophomore center Madi Stokes has also exploded this season, averaging 11.7 ppg and 12.1 rpg while also recording a conference-best 34 blocks.
Stokes is also shooting 54.6 percent (65-119) from the floor and 81.0 percent (34-42) from the free throw line. Turnbull has shot 42.4 percent (73-172) from the floor and 76.7 percent (46-60) from the charity stripe. Layne Skiles has been a threat from 3-point land, going 15-of-42 (35.7%) from that range while shooting 40.5 percent (30-74) from the floor.
LAST TIME VS. MISSOURI SOUTHERN
The Bearcats suffered a 58-42 loss to the Lions on Feb. 20, 2020 in Bearcat Arena. Northwest had just one scorer in double digits, while
Jaelyn Haggard chipped in eight points, followed by six each from
Mallory McConkey and
Jayna Green. The Bearcats shot just 24.1 percent from the floor and 27.6 percent from 3-point range.
The Bearcats also only scored a combined 11 points in the first and third periods, while the Lions poured in 23 points in those combined quarters.
