MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team took care of William Woods University in an exhibition contest Saturday at Bearcat Arena, 70-35.
Northwest locked in defensively from the start and limited WWU to 20.4% shooting from the field. WWU made only 10-of-49 shots from the field. Northwest allowed only three made field goals in the second half as the Owls shot 3-of-28 from the field.
Offensively, Northwest knocked in 11 three-pointers and shot 53.1% from the field. Northwest made nine of its first 11 shots from the floor and opened up a 22-7 lead at the end of the first period.
Jillian Fleming scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. Fleming was 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from distance.
Molly Hartnett, the reigning MIAA Freshman of the Year, came off the bench and contributed 13 points and handed out a game-high four assists.
Northwest will open the regular season at home next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. against Southwest Minnesota State. Nebraska-Kearney will meet Minnesota-Crookston at 5:30 p.m. to begin the evening's doubleheader action in Bearcat Arena.
