Trio of contests await Bearcat women's basketball for Turkey week

NORTHWEST WITH THREE GAMES ON SLATE THIS WEEK
The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat women's basketball team (1-1 overall) will take on the task of three games this week sandwiched around Thanksgiving. Northwest will play host to Missouri S&T Monday at 6 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. Northwest will take part in the Washburn Thanksgiving Classic with matchups against Rockhurst (Friday, 1 p.m.) and Winona State (Saturday, 1 p.m.)

BATTLING ON THE BOARDS
Northwest is 13-1 for head coach Austin Meyer when it wins the rebounding battle. Northwest won the battle of the boards against Minnesota-Crookston, 35-33, and won the game, 53-48.

NORTHWEST VS MISSOURI S&T
Northwest owns a 25-19 record all-time against Missouri S&T. The teams last met on Nov. 26, 2016, when S&T scored a 68-65 victory over Northwest.
    Missouri S&T's last game in Bearcat Arena came on Feb. 26, 2005.

NORTHWEST VS. ROCKHURST
Northwest holds a slim 12-11 lead in the all-time series with Rockhurst. The last meeting occurred Nov. 24, 2017, when Rockhurst posted a 62-47 win against Northwest.

NORTHWEST VS. WINONA STATE
Northwest scored a 75-69 victory in the only previous encounter with Winona State in Bearcat Arena back on Nov. 18, 2005.

NOT A LOT OF TURNOVERS
Northwest ranks No. 21 in the nation in fewest turnovers through its first two games. Northwest committed eight turnovers against Southwest Minnesota State and 17 vs. Minnesota-Crookston. The Bearcats are averaging 12.5 turnovers per game.

BATTLING ON THE BOARDS

SWATTING SHOTS
The Bearcats rank No. 16 in the nation and No. 2 in the MIAA in blocked shots per game. Northwest blocked six shots in its opener vs. Southwest Minnesota State. The Bearcats added five more blocks in their win over Minnesota-Crookston.

PAITYN PLACES EMPHASIS ON BLOCKS
Paityn Rau ranks No. 8 in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.0). Rau blocked three shots in the opener vs. Southwest Minnesota State, and added three more swatted shots against Minnesota-Crookston.

RAU GETS BACK IN THE SWING
Paityn Rau reached double-figure scoring with 14 points in Northwest's 53-48 win over Minnesota-Crookston. It marked the first double-figure scoring game for Rau since she went for 12 points against Emporia State on March 5, 2020.
    Rau missed the entire 2020-21 season after starting 29 games and playing in all 30 games in her freshman campaign in 2019-20. Rau averaged 6.1 points per game on 47.9 percent shooting from the floor.

HARTNETT LEADS IN SCORING
Redshirt freshman Molly Hartnett leads the Bearcats in scoring through the first weekend of play at 11.5 points per game.
    Hartnett went for 16 points in the opener against Southwest Minnesota State.
    Hartnett is 9-of-10 at the free throw line.

KELDERMAN FROM DEEP
True freshman guard Peyton Kelderman leads the squad with four made three-pointers through the opening two games.
    Kelderman made a pair of threes in the opener vs. Southwest Minnesota State and than dropped in two more vs. Minnesota-Crookston.
    Kelderman scored her first double-figures game with 10 points against Minnesota-Crookston. Kelderman's layup with 3:40 left against UMC put Northwest on top for good.

MILESTONE WATCH
Fifth-year senior Mallory McConkey is edging close to 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. McConkey has posted 810 points and 481 rebounds in her career. She would be the 19th member of the 1,000 points/500 rebounds club. She would also be the 28th player to reach 1,000 points.

GREEN WORKING FOR BLOCKS
Sophomore Jayna Green entered into Northwest's top-10 all-time shot blockers last season. She registered 29 blocks as a freshman before notching 33 in 2020-21. Green has blocked two shots this season.

50 SEASONS STRONG
The Bearcats are playing in their 50th season as a program. The first women's basketball season was in 1971-72 when head coach Sherri Reeves led the 'Cats to a 9-2 record as MAIAW Champions. Northwest also finished 5th in the AIAW Region VI Tournament where they defeated Wayne (Neb.) State, 74-62, before falling to Kansas State, 70-66.

MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The Bearcat women were picked ninth in both the MIAA coaches' poll and the media poll.
    Last season Northwest was picked ninth in the coaches' poll and finished ninth after losing three starters to season-ending injuries.
