MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team evened its mark at 1-1 with a 53-48 victory over Minnesota-Crookston in Bearcat Arena.
A trio of Bearcats scored in double figures led by
Paityn Rau's team-high 14 points as she drained 6-of-8 shots from the field.
Peyton Kelderman and
Mallory McConkey each tallied 10 points in the winning effort.
The Bearcats overcame a cold shooting start to the game. Northwest made one of its first seven shots.
Jillian Fleming knocked in the first bucket of the game for the Bearcats with 4:27 to play in the first quarter that left the home team trailing, 8-2. Northwest shot 18.2% in the first quarter and trailed Crookston the end, 12-5.
Northwest enjoyed a 17-10 scoring edge in the second quarter to level the matchup at 22-22 at the break. Northwest sank 7-of-12 shots in the second quarter, while Crookston could manage only 3-of-11 from the field.
Rau scored in the paint to open the third quarter to give Northwest its first lead of the game at 24-22. Northwest opened up a six-point cushion at 32-26 after Kelderman buried a three-pointer with 7:16 to play in the third. However, Crookston mounted a charge and tied the game at 34-34 with 1:49 left in the third. Kelderman knocked in another three-point to give Northwest a 37-34 edge at the end of three.
Northwest was up four at 42-38 with 6:21 to play after Fleming sank a triple from the right wing. Crookston again battled back to tie the contest at 42-42 with 4:34 to play. Kelderman drove the lane and hit a scoop layup with 3:40 to go give Northwest the lead for good at 44-42. Crookston's Bren Fox hit a jumper with 1:32 left to pull the Golden Eagles to within two, 50-48.
Jayna Green made one of two free throws with :36 seconds left to put Northwest up three, 51-48. Crookston turned the ball over in the lane on its ensuing possession and Hartnett buried two free throws with :32 left to seal the five-point victory.
The Bearcats will be off until Nov. 22 when they play host to Missouri S&T.
