Northwest dominates NSU on the road, 59-7

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The No. 10-ranked Northwest Missouri State University football team jumped all over the Northeastern State University RiverHawks in front of a sparse crowd at Doc Wadley Stadium, 59-7.
 
Northwest moved its season mark to 6-1 overall, while Northeastern State fell to 2-6 on the year.

Northwest's Jamar Moya rushed for a career-high 169 yards on eight carries and tallied two touchdowns on the ground, including a 71-yard scamper in the third quarter. Moya also caught four passes for two touchdowns. Moya accounted for four of Northwest's eight touchdowns on the day.

The Bearcat defensive unit put on quite a show by limiting the RiverHawks to 101 total yards. NSU rushed 28 times for 25 yards. The RiverHawks passed for 76 yards on 15-of-29 passing. NSU was held to six total first downs.

Northwest piled up 648 yards of total offense and 32 first downs. Northwest rushed for 387 yards and passed for 261 yards in the victory. Northwest piled up 32 first downs.
 
Quarterback Mike Hohensee engineered a six-play, 61-yard drive to open the scoring. Hohensee hit tight end Cole Hembrough on a three-yard touchdown pass with 8:52 left in the first quarter to give Northwest a 7-0 lead.
 
The Bearcats pushed the lead to 14 on a 16-yard touchdown strike from Hohensee to Moya with 5:29 left in the second quarter.
 
Northwest cashed in on an NSU turnover for its next points. Dedrick Strambler recovered a fumble and set up the Bearcats at the nine-yard line. Hohensee converted the NSU miscue into a touchdown on a four-yard scoring run on third-and-goal with 12:20 to play in the second quarter.
 
The Bearcats took a 28-0 lead with 7:26 left in the second quarter following another touchdown connection between Hohensee and Moya. Hohensee found Moya on the left side of the formation for a five-yard touchdown pass to cap a 9-play, 80-yard drive.
 
NSU got on the board with 1:11 left in the half when Jordan Lamotte intercepted a Hohensee pass and returned it 23 yards for a pick six to cut the Northwest advantage to 28-7.
 
Moya found the end zone for the third time Saturday on a 10-yard run with 9:36 left in the third quarter. Moya's score gave Northwest a 35-7 lead with 9:36 to play in the third. The Bearcat scoring drive went nine plays for 75 yards and consumed 5:24 off the clock.
 
Braden Wright saw his first action since a week one victory at Fort Hays State. Wright drove the Bearcats 81 yards in six plays to pay dirt. Wright connected with Alec Tatum on a 19-yard passing touchdown with 4:58 left in the third quarter to give Northwest a commanding 42-7 advantage.
 
Moya tallied his fourth score of the game on a 71-yard scamper with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Moya's touchdown pushed the Bearcat lead to 49-7.
 
Cole Lammel added a 38-yard field goal with 8:22 remaining in the fourth quarter to put Northwest on top, 52-7.
 
Robert Rawie capped the scoring in the game with a 13-yard rushing touchdown with 3:28 left in the game to make it 59-7 in favor of Northwest.

Northwest will play host to Nebraska-Kearney next Saturday for the Bearcats's annual Homecoming contest. Kick is set for 2 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.
 
NOTES: Northwest defeated Northeastern State for the 11th consecutive time in the series … Northwest is 11-0 all-time vs. NSU … Moya entered the game having not scored a touchdown, and proceeded to find the end zone three times (two receiving, one rushing) … Al McKeller surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the fifth time this season (22nd time in his collegiate career) ... the last time Northwest had two 100-yard rushers in a game came at Grand Valley State on Nov. 17, 2018 when Isaiah Strayhorn had 171 yards on the ground and Josh Caldwell had 147 rushing yards … Braden Wright's 19-yard touchdown pass to Alec Tatum was the 50th passing touchdown of Wright's collegiate career … Drew Dostal registered his second career interception in the fourth quarter ... Northwest went 5-of-7 on third-down conversions ... it's the 34th time that Northwest has scored 50 or more points since the 2011 season.
