Bearcats romp Ichabods, 5-0

The Northwest Missouri State soccer team picked up their first win in MIAA play with a 5-0 shutout over Washburn. This is the second shutout of the season The Bearcats improved to 5-3-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the conference. 

Northwest controlled possession in the first half which opened up strong scoring opportunities. The Bearcats recorded nine of their 10 shots on goal in the opening period. Teagan Blackburn scored the first goal for the Bearcats off of a penalty kick just under the nine minute mark. Then Kaylie Rock added another goal from Blackburn at 19:25 before Caroline Sanders made it a 3-0 advantage off of a goal from Alex Mausbach. Gritty defense shined as well as Northwest limited Washburn to just two shots in the first half. 

The Bearcats drew another penalty kick at 51:54, with Sanders capitalizing on another goal-scoring opportunity to extend the lead to 4-0. An own goal by Washburn was the final dagger in the Northwest triumph. 

Northwest Missouri State finished with 18 total shots while keeper Ashley Williams recorded seven saves in goal for the Bearcats. 

The Bearcats take on No. 5 Emporia State on Sunday as they host their annual Pink Out match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Notes: This five-goal effort from Northwest are the most goals by a Bearcat team in an MIAA since a 6-0 win over Southwest Baptist on Sept. 29, 2017 ... Caroline Sanders' two goals in today's match are her first two collegiate career goals ... with another goal in today's match, Teagan Blackburn is now seventh all time for Northwest in individual career goals ... with four shots on goal, Kaylie Rock owns a team-high 19 on target shots this season ... Northwest's five goals vs. Washburn are the most goals the Bearcats have ever scored against the Ichabods ... the previous best of three goals came in a 4-3 loss to Washburn on Oct. 15, 2004 and in a 3-1 win over Washburn on Sept. 10, 2003.
