Bearcats drop to 3-3 in loss to Gorillas

The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team dropped to 3-3 on the season in a loss to Pittsburg State, 80-50, and its ninth straight loss in Pittsburg against the Gorillas.

The Gorillas scored on a Kaylee DaMitz layup in their first possession and held the lead for the remainder of the half. Kylie Coleman and Mallory McConkey added a spark in the middle of the first quarter by scoring five and four points, respectively to pull within 11-12, but the Gorilla offense continued to push the pace.

Pittsburg State led a balanced offensive attack in the first half with all starters scoring six points or more while Northwest relied on Coleman's 10 first-half points with an additional eight points coming from McConkey. The difference in the first half proved to be seven Gorilla points coming from six Bearcat turnovers, which left the Bearcats trailing 34-47 at the end of the first half.

The third quarter was dominated by the Gorillas as they led by as many as 26 points and scored 28 total points in the period. The home team took a 68-42 lead into the final quarter. The Gorilla offense continued to roll as they finished the game with their largest lead.

The Bearcats will be back in action in Bearcat Arena next week as they host Washburn on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m.

NOTES: Coleman and McConkey led the Bearcats in scoring with 12 points each … Northwest shot 39.2 percent from the floor on 20-of-51 shooting … the Gorillas shot 56.1 percent from the floor on 32-of-57 shooting … Pittsburg State had four players score in double figures … Coleman led Northwest with six rebounds … the Bearcats pulled down 22 total rebounds … Northwest committed 13 turnovers while forcing only nine Pittsburg State turnovers.
