NO. 1 BEARCATS IN KC FOR 2020 MIAA TOURNAMENT
The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team (30-1 overall, 18-1 MIAA) will compete in the championship game of the 2020 MIAA Tournament held at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The title game will be played Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

FIFTH 30-WIN SEASON
Northwest has reached the 30-win mark for the fifth time in program history with its 80-54 trouncing of Missouri Western.
    Northwest set its single-season win mark in 2018-19 when the Bearcats won 38 games en route to the national championship.
    The Bearcats have tallied 30 or more wins in three of the last four seasons.

15TH TITLE GAME APPEARANCE
Northwest will be making its 15th MIAA Tournament title game appearance on Sunday against No. 3-seeded and No. 22-ranked Missouri Southern.
    The Bearcats have won eight MIAA Tournament titles, including four consecutive entering Sunday.
    The Bearcats are 2-0 against Missouri Southern (W, 96, 75; W, 77-76) this season.
    Northwest is 4-2 all-time in the MIAA Tournament vs. Missouri Southern. The Bearcats and Lions met in the MIAA final in 2000 when the Lions prevailed 90-79.

Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Ben McCollum, the Bearcats have won four straight MIAA tournament championships.
    Northwest became the first MIAA school to win four straight league tournament titles in 2019.

MAC IN MIAA TOURNAMENT
Overall, Bearcat head coach Ben McCollum is 20-4 in the MIAA Tournament. He has guided the Bearcats to six appearances in the finals with four tournament championships.
    With a win over Lincoln on Thursday, Bearcat McCollum has guided Northwest to a perfect 9-0 mark in MIAA quarterfinal games.
    McCollum has posted a mark of 6-3 in the MIAA semifinals. McCollum and Northwest has won five consecutive MIAA semifinal matchups.
    With a victory on Sunday, McCollum would tie Washburn's Bob Chipman for the league record for most MIAA Tournament championships with five. Chipman won five in 25 tournament appearances. McCollum is making only his ninth tournament appearance.

DOUGHERTY, WELTY MATCH MIAA TITLE GAME APPEARANCE RECORD
Northwest's Tyler Dougherty and Ryan Welty have match the MIAA record for most championship game appearances at four.
    Dougherty and Welty equaled the mark of four set by Southeast Missouri State's Michael Morris (1985-88), Central Missouri's Ron Nunnelly (1982-85) and Tyrone Lee (1982-85) and Washburn's Jordan Canfield (1993-95, 97). Morris helped Southeast Missouri State to three titles in his four title game appearances. Nunnelly, Lee and Canfield each won two MIAA tourney crowns.
    Dougherty and Welty are looking to win their fourth MIAA tourney titles on Sunday.

WELTY OWNS MIAA TOURNEY TRIPLES MARK
Northwest senior Ryan Welty has sank 29 three-pointers in 11 MIAA tournament games to become the league's all-time career leader.
    Pittsburg State's Oscar Gonzalez held the previous career mark in MIAA tourneys with 28 made three-pointers from 1996-1999.

Northwest's Ryan Welty has played in 11 career MIAA Tournament games. With his next game on Sunday, Welty would tie Washburn's Jordan Canfield, who set the mark with 12 tournament games played from 1993-1995 and 1997.

22-GAME WIN STREAK FOR NORTHWEST
The Bearcats are in the midst of a 22-game win streak, which is tied for the second-longest active win streak among NCAA Division II teams. Lincoln Memorial owns the nation's longest win streak at 31.
    Earlier this season, Northwest had a 46-game win streak snapped. The Bearcats are 68-1 over the last two seasons.

16 STRAIGHT WINS AT MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM
Northwest has won 16 consecutive games at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
    The Bearcats have won four straight MIAA tourney titles and added two non-conference wins over Illinois-Springfield (Nov. 19, 2019) and Washburn (Nov. 21, 2018).
    Northwest's last loss at Municipal came March 7, 2015, in a 65-58 setback vs. Pittsburg State.

DOUGHERTY, WELTY, FINLEY ALL-TIME WINS LEADERS
Seniors Tyler Dougherty, Kirk Finley and Ryan Welty have led Northwest to a mark of 130-6 in their careers.
    The trio broke the previous mark of 127 wins set by Dray Starzl from 2015-2019.
    Northwest went 35-1 in 2016-17 and won the program's first national title. The Bearcats went 27-4 in 2017-18, before going 38-0 and winning their second national crown in 2018-19. Northwest is 30-1 in the 2019-20 season.

LOOKING TO HOST REGIONAL FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE SEASON
Northwest solidified its hold on the No. 1 spot in the NCAA Division II Central Region rankings.
    The Bearcats (29-1 overall, 25-1 vs. Div. II opponents, 24-1 vs. Central Region foes) are looking to serve as the Central Region host for the fourth consecutive season.
    The 2020 Central Region Tournament will be held March 14 (first round), March 15 (second round) and March 17 (regional final). The top eight teams in each region will qualify for the 2020 NCAA Division II Tournament.
    Northwest has secured victories this season over No. 2 Southern Nazarene (W, 100-88), No. 5 Rogers State (W, 74-55), No. 6 Missouri Southern (W, 96-75; W, 77-76).

Northwest moved back to No. 1 in the nation in the Jan. 28 NABC Division II Top 25 Poll. Northwest has been ranked No. 1 in the nation in four consecutive seasons.

The March 3 NABC Division II Top 25 poll marks the 30th straight week that Northwest has been ranked in the top five.

NINE STRAIGHT 20-WIN YEARS
Northwest eclipsed the 20-win mark for the ninth straight year.
    Northwest was one of five NCAA Division II schools to have won 20 or more games in nine straight seasons. Northwest (9), West Liberty (16), Bellarmine (11), Indiana Pa. (12) and Lincoln Memorial (11) have extended their steak of 20-win seasons in 2019-2020.
    It marks the 26th 20-win season in program history and ninth under head coach Ben McCollum.

HUDGINS, HAWKINS SCORING AT HIGH RATES
Sophomore Trevor Hudgins and junior Ryan Hawkins are pouring in points at a high rate as both have eclipsed the 500-point scoring mark this season. Hawkins has posted 720 points, while Hudgins sits at 595 entering the MIAA Tournament.
    Hudgins lit up Lincoln for a career-high 36 points and followed it up with a game-high 33 points at No. 14 Missouri Southern.
    Hawkins has scored 20 or more in 10 of his last 12 games. Hawkins collected three consecutive double-double performances, while also reaching 20-plus points in his double-doubles against Central Missouri, Lincoln and Missouri Southern. Hawkins secured his fifth 30-point game of the season with 31 points in Northwest's 75-54 win over Lincoln in Kansas City.

DIEGO SNATCHES 19 BOARDS, DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Sophomore Diego Bernard snatched a career-high 19 rebounds as he tallied his fourth double-double of the season and fifth of his career in Northwest's 80-54 MIAA Tournament semifinal win over Missouri Western.
    Bernard posted the most rebounds by a Bearcat in 33 years with his 19-rebound effort. Northwest's Jeff Hutcheon tallied 20 rebounds against Southeast Missouri State on Feb. 26, 1987.

Junior Ryan Hawkins tops the Bearcats in scoring at 23.2 points per game.
    Hawkins is shooting 56.3% from the field, including 45.6% from three-point range.
    Hawkins leads the team in rebounds (233), steals (67) and blocks (25).
    He becomes only the fourth Bearcat to score 700 or more points in a season.

BEARCATS OVERCOME 12-POINT DEFICIT
Northwest overcame a 12-point, first-half deficit against Washburn in a 69-61 win. Washburn's 35-23 lead over Northwest is the largest deficit the Bearcats have overcome in a victory this season.

NORTHWEST DOES QUITE WELL IN ST JOE
With its 92-69 victory at Missouri Western, Northwest extended its win streak to 18 games in a row in the city of St. Joseph.

VICTORY OVER RANKED ROAD OPPONENT
Northwest's 96-75 win over No. 14 Missouri Southern was the first road victory over a ranked foe for the Bearcats since a 72-58 triumph over No. 12-ranked Central Missouri on Dec. 5, 2015.

HUDGINS AT THE BUZZER FOR THE TITLE
With Northwest trailing Missouri Southern 76-75 in the closing seconds, the Bearcats committed enough fouls to put the Lions into the bonus.
    The Bearcats put Braelon Walker to the line for a 1-and-1 with 6.8 seconds left. Walker missed the front end and Ryan Hawkins corralled the miss. Hawkins found Trevor Hudgins who sped down the floor to the left wing.
    Hudgins was met by a pair of Lions defenders, but split them with a jump stop and lifted an off-balance, lean-in jumper that found nothing but the bottom of the net as the clock hit 0:00.0.
    Hudgins was mobbed by Bernard and his teammates as the Bearcat student section flooded onto the floor to celebrate the seventh consecutive MIAA regular season title for Northwest. Hudgins game-winner capped a 19-point, six-assist performance.

DREAMER COMES OUT FIRING
After Luke Waters picked up two fouls 100 seconds into Northwest's matchup with No. 17 Missouri Southern, head coach Ben McCollum turned to true freshman Wes Dreamer to take the court.
    Dreamer did more than that, as he sank four first-half three-pointers and scored 12 points in just under seven minutes of action. Dreamer was 4-of-6 from three-point range and was one of five Bearcats that reached double-figure scoring in the 77-76 win over the Lions.

LUKE LIGHTS UP LIONS
Redshirt freshman Luke Waters is averaging 18.0 points per game in two games this season against the Missouri Southern Lions.
    Waters tallied a career-high 19 points and was perfect from the field in Northwest's 96-75 win at Missouri Southern (Feb. 13). Waters went 8-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range against the Lions. Waters also grabbed four rebounds to go along with an assist and a steal. Waters did not commit a turnover in his nearly 31 minutes of court time.
    Waters posted 17 second-half points against the Lions at home (Feb. 20) as he helped lead the Bearcats to a 77-76 win over the visitors from Joplin. Waters went 7-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
    In two games against the Lions, Waters is shooting 88.2% (15-of-17 FGs) from the field. Waters has buried 6-of-7 (85.7%) three-point shots agaisnt the Lions this season.

100-POINT MARK
Northwest has scored 100 or more points 14 times under head coach Ben McCollum.
    The Bearcats scored a 100-88 victory over No. 9 Southern Nazarene on Nov. 2 at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Civic Arena.
    Northwest reached the 100-point mark for the second time this season with a 102-59 triumph over William Jewell Nov. 21 at Bearcat Arena.
    The Bearcats blitzed Central Methodist with a 110-66 triumph at home on Dec. 16 for their third 100-point game of the 2019-2020 season.

PRESS CONFERENCE TUESDAY AT PIZZA RANCH

BEARCATS SIGN FOUR FOR 2020-21 SEASON
Northwest head coach Ben McCollum has signed four recruits for the 2020-21 season.
    Daniel Abreu, a 6'6" small forward, will join the Bearcats after completing his senior season with Jeremy Dresslaer and the Willard Tigers. Abreu led Willard High School to 17-10 record and a berth into the district final as a junior while averaging 27.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists on 55% shooting from the field and 45% shooting from three-point range. Abreu was tabbed as the Central Ozark Conference Player of the Year while also being selected to the MBCA Class 5 All-State Team.
    Byron Alexander, a 6'4" shooting guard, will join the Bearcats after completing his senior season with Chris Neff and the Staley Falcons. As a junior, Alexander averaged 17.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.8 steals. In the summer, Alexander competed with the MoKan Select AAU Program out of Kansas City.
    Isaiah Jackson, a 6-2 guard from William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri, will join the Bearcats for the 2020-2021 season. Last year, Jackson led the Chrisman Bears to a 20-11 record and an appearance in the MSHSAA Class 5 Quarterfinals. This year, the Bears are 13-7 and Jackson is averaging 14 points per game on 55% shooting from the field and 36% shooting from three-point range. He is also pulling in eight rebounds per game and dishing out four assists per game. On Jan. 21 against Center High School, Jackson recorded a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.
    Spencer Schomers, a 6'5" shooting guard, will join the Bearcats after completing his senior season with Josh Luedtke and Creighton Prep. As a junior, Schomers averaged 7.7 points while knocking down 43 three-pointers for the Junior Jays en route to a 22-5 record and Nebraska Class A State Tournament appearance.
