Bearcats drop two games in 5-State Classic

EMPORIA, Kansas – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team suffered two losses Saturday in the Emporia State 5-State Classic.

The Bearcats fell 6-3 to Concordia-St. Paul and 6-5 to Wayne State. Northwest is 3-10 on the season.
 
Game 1 vs. Concordia-St. Paul - L, 6-2
Concordia-St. Paul went up 5-0 over the Bearcats in the first five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Erin Keeney started the momentum with a double to left field. Next at bat, Karli Allen singled to right field to put Keeney in scoring position.

Abby Nolte reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing Keeney to score and cut the lead to 5-1.

Concordia-St. Paul scored another run off an RBI in the top of the seventh inning to advance the lead to 6-1.

20524In the bottom of the seventh inning, Kaitlyn Weis homered to left field marking her 38th career-home run and became the all-time home run leader in Northwest Missouri State softball history.

The Bearcats couldn't catch back up to Concordia-St. Paul's 6-2 lead and dropped game 1.
 
Game 2 vs. Wayne State - L, 6-5
Wayne State got on the board first off an RBI to go up 1-0 in the first inning.

Abby Nolte scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. Addy Watts scored off a fielding error by the short stop to take the lead 2-1.

Wayne State answered in the bottom of the second inning scoring three more runs and taking back the lead, 4-2.

Kaitlyn Weis hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3.

Wayne State fought back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI to advance their lead to 5-3 over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats rallied in the top of the sixth inning scoring two runs to tie the game, 5-5. Weis hit a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Olivia Daugherty to score. Shortly after, Karli Allen hit an RBI single to bring in Sydne Brashear to score.

The Wildcats scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win 6-5 over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats move to 3-10 overall on the season. They will face Minnesota State Sunday at 12 p.m. to finish the 5-States Classic.
 
NOTES: Daugherty leads the team with a .400 batting average. She has five doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Brashear is right behind with a .386 average, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. Weis is slugging a .357 average with three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI.
