MARYVILLE, Missouri - The Northwest Missouri State University men's tennis team toppled No. 41-ranked Washburn on Thursday at the Frank Grube Tennis Courts, 5-2.
Northwest (6-4 overall, 2-0 MIAA) took advantage of stellar singles' play to score the dual victory. Northwest won five of the six singles' matches. Washburn (6-4 overall, 0-1 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the dual after taking two of the three doubles' matches.
No. 13-ranked
Franco Oliva knocked off No. 8-ranked Aleja Valarezo Plaza, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Oliva moves to 21-5 on the year and 7-3 in dual matches.
Northwest's No. 2 singles' performer Fabian Calloud also went three sets to get the win over Washburn's Paul Haase, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1. Calloud is 2-0 in MIAA dual play and 11-7 on the season.
The Bearcats had to go three sets at No. 3 singles as well and
Agustin Velasco pulled it out over Washburn's Raul-Alin Dicu, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
Northwest's
Bjorn Kurtze scored Northwest's fourth three-set triumph with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Washburn's Chase Brill at No. 6 singles.
Rahul Manoah was the lone Bearcat to win his singles' match in two sets when he dispatched the Ichabods's Marc Roura Casi, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
