MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University women's soccer team battled out a 4-3 victory over the Missouri Western Griffons Friday afternoon at the Bearcat Pitch. This win snapped an eight-match losing streak in the series against Missouri Western.
Missouri Western's Madison Utley put the Griffons on the board first with a goal to grab a 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Kaylie Rock answered two minutes after with her first goal of the season and first career goal to tie the game, 1-1.
Not long after,
Bri Wawiorka found the back of the net to push the Bearcat lead to 2-1.
Izzy Romano and
Manuela Gonzalez were each credited with an assist on the goal.
Right before the end of the first half, Mackenzie O'Neill shot a corner kick that tied the game again, 2-2.
Five minutes in to the second half,
Izzy Romano headed one in off a cross from
Alex Mausbach to give the Bearcats the lead again, 3-2.
Not a minute later, the Griffons answered back with a goal from Kaili Campbell to once again even the match, 3-3.
In the 78th minute, Rock broke away and found the back of the net scoring her second goal of the game. The Bearcats were able to hold off the Griffons and came away with the win, 4-3.
The Bearcats improve to 5-9-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference play. They will host Missouri Southern Sunday at 1 p.m. for the last regular season game. Prior to Sunday's match, Northwest will honor its four senior student-athletes -
Emily Madden,
Izzy Romano,
Evan Rooney and
Natasha Samudzi.
