Bearcats dominate Gorillas in three sets

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The No. 14-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat volleyball team made quick work of the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Saturday.

Northwest won by set scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15. Northwest is now 17-5 overall and 10-4 in MIAA action, while Pittsburg State drops to 11-12 overall and 6-8 in league play. It marks the sixth straight win for the Bearcats in the series with the Gorillas.

The Bearcats won ugly in three sets on Friday night against Missouri Southern and turned it around 180 degrees for a different type of three-set sweep on Saturday night. 

Northwest hit .311 with 47 kills and only 10 errors. Pittsburg State hit .030 with 27 kills and 23 errors. The Bearcats had 74 digs, while the Gorillas tallied 56 digs. Northwest had a side out percentage of 70.8 percent for the match. The match featured only five ties and four lead changes as the Bearcats scored the win in an hour and 19 minutes.

Juniors Hallie Sidney and Morgan Lewis powered the offense. Sidney had 18 kills (.457) and Lewis had nine kills (.643). The Bearcats got double-doubles from Sidney and junior setter Maddy Ahrens. Sophomore Hannah Koechl led the defensive effort with 17 digs and sophomore Bethany Elkins notched a team-best four blocks.

The Bearcats will be on the road next Friday for a tilt against the MIAA-leading Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. The match will begin at 6 p.m. in Kearney, Nebraska.

NOTES: Northwest has defeated Pittsburg State six straight times.
