Jennies top Bearcats in nationally-ranked matchup

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The No. 9-ranked Central Missouri Jennies scored a 3-0 win over the No. 14-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat volleyball team on Tuesday at Bearcat Arena.

Central Missouri won by set scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-18. UCM improves to 13-5 overall and 7-2 in MIAA play, while Northwest drops to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in league play.

The Bearcats started strong by winning the first five points of the match. Northwest's 6-1 lead would soon evaporate and the Jennies took a 7-6 advantage. Following a service error by the Bearcats, the Jennies held an 18-14 lead. Northwest fought back and leveled the set at 19-19 on a kill by freshman Jaden Ferguson. However, UCM would run off six of the next seven points and score a 25-20 win. UCM hit .302 with 16 kills and three errors, while Northwest hit .244 with 15 kills and four errors. The Bearcats could not keep up with the Jennies in siding out as the visitors had 55 percent, while the home squad had just 44 percent.

UCM exploded with an 18-7 start to the second set. UCM used a 15-4 run after the set was deadlocked at 3-3. UCM hit .342 with 17 kills and four errors, while Northwest had seven errors and only seven kills for a .000 attack percentage. Northwest had a paltry 33 percent side out effort in the second set.

The Jennies locked up with the match with a 25-18 triumph in the third set. The Bearcats hit -.027 with eight kills and nine errors in the third set. UCM hit .161 but was able to side out at 66 percent, compared to 48 percent for Northwest.

The Bearcats will travel to Emporia State (Friday, 7 p.m.) and to Washburn (Saturday, 3 p.m.) for its weekend MIAA action.
