BEARCATS FACE ICHABODS
Northwest plays the second game of its conference homestand this Saturday. After winning two conference road games they lost to a tough Emporia team in an extremely back and forth game outside of a 12-0 Emporia run to start the 3rd quarter. They now continue to play a 9-4 Washburn team coming off an 11-point win against Missouri Western, 65-54.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Northwest fell to Emporia State 54-41 in Bearcat Arena. Northwest was down 1 at the half, then the Hornets had a 12-0 run to start the third quarter. Northwest was plagued by poor shooting, shooting 30% from the field, and only 16% from the three-point line.Â
Mallory McConkey led the Bearcats with 8 points andÂ
Kaylani Maiava led the team in rebounds with 6. This was the first time that Northwest did not have a double digit scorer was against UCM in December 2017. The Bearcats were able to keep turnovers to a minimum only giving the ball away 9 times. They held Emporia to 45% shooting and 23% from the three-point line.
DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT
Defense has been a huge emphasis for head coachÂ
Austin Meyer and the Bearcats this year. It has been a huge improvement for them moving from last in the conference last year in team scoring defense to sixth this year. Last year the team allowed 74.1 ppg and this year that number has drastically improved to 59.9. Northwest has not allowed less than 60 ppg for a season since the 2012-2013 season.Â
