Volleyball opens MIAA play at home Friday, Saturday

The Northwest Missouri State volleyball team (8-3 overall) will begin MIAA play this Friday and Saturday in Bearcat Arena.
 
Northwest will play host to Lindenwood (Fri., 6 p.m.) and Central Missouri (Sat., 6:30 p.m.).
 
Friday night will be Aloha Volleyball Night when the Lions visit Bearcat Arena. All fans in attendance will receive free leis and free snow cones courtesy of Kool Kats.
 
Northwest will offer free admission to Saturday's volleyball match vs. Central Missouri. The match follows Northwest's Family Weekend football game vs. Missouri Southern that begins at 1:30 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium.
 
Northwest owns a 9-3 lead vs. Lindenwood. The Bearcats split the season series vs. the Lions last season with the road squad winning each contest.
 
The Bearcats also split the season series last season against Central Missouri. The home squad won each contest – Northwest's win last season over UCM was the Bearcats's first victory at home in the all-time series vs. the Jennies.
 
Northwest head coach Amy Woerth captured her 100th career victory at the Newman Classic. Woerth became the fourth Northwest volleyball coach to reach the 100-win plateau. Sarah Pelster (199 from 1991-2002), Pam Stanek (176 from 1977-1981) and Susie Homan (105 from 1982-1984) were the previous three Bearcat mentors to win at least 100 matches.
 
The Bearcats are a perfect 8-0 in three-set matches this season.
 
Senior Maddy Bruder (Firth, Neb.) leads the MIAA in kills per set (4.13). Bruder has 157 kills and 93 digs through 11 matches.
 
Bruder led Northwest to a perfect 3-0 mark at the Jet Classic in Wichita, Kansas. Bruder posted 41 kills and added a pair of double-doubles as Northwest swept all three matches. Bruder had 13 kills, five digs and a block in a 3-0 won over Ouachita Baptist. Bruder came up big on Saturday with 13 kills, 10 digs, two blocks and a service ace in a 3-0 triumph over St. Edward's (Texas). Bruder finished up Saturday with 15 kills (.419), 13 digs, two service aces and a block in a 3-0 victory over tournament host Newman.
 
Bruder has accrued 1,344 career kills to rank No. 5 in Bearcat history. Diann Davis (1994-1997) holds the Northwest career record with 1,740 kills.
 
Bruder has posted four double-doubles this season and 46 in her Bearcat career.
 
Sophomore setter Maddy Ahrens (Appleton, Wisconsin) averaged 11.0 assists and 3.56 digs per set in lifting the Bearcats to a 3-0 mark at the Jet Classic. Ahrnes had 29 assists, 13 digs, three kills and a service ace in a 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist. Ahrens added 35 assists, 12 digs, two solo blocks, two service aces and a kill in a 3-0 triumph over St. Edward's (Texas). Ahrens tallied 35 assists, seven digs, two block assists, a kill and a service ace in Northwest's 3-0 win over tournament host Newman.
 
Sophomore Bethany Elkins (Belton, Missouri) leads the squad in blocks (38). Elkins has notched a team-best five solos and 33 assisted blocks. Elkins has recorded at least three blocks in nine of the 11 matches.
 
Senior Olivia Nowakowski (Kansas City, Missouri) has posted a team-best 168 digs (4.42 digs/set). Nowakowski ranks No. 6 on Northwest's all-time digs list with 1,416 career digs. Megan Danek ranks No. 5 with 1,458 digs from 1999-2002.
