Baseball falls in 2018 opener

- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith, 5-2, in the 2018 season opener on Saturday at Crowder Field in Fort Smith, Ark.
- The game was the season opener for both teams and was the first game in a three-game series that extends until Monday.

Key Northwest Statistics
- Northwest scored two runs in the fourth while the Lions scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh.
- The Bearcats had two runs on five hits with no errors. Arkansas-Fort Smith had five runs on seven hits with two errors.
- Luke Hassman was 1-for-4 with and RBI double in the fourth. He also scored the Bearcats' second run.
- Alixon Herrera was 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
- Landon Figg scored Northwest's first run of the game after getting hit by a pitch.
- Kevin Handzlik was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Mondesi Gutierrez and Jay Hrdlicka each went 1-for-4.
- Joseph Hietpas got the season opening start on the mound. He went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He struck out seven and issued two walks.
- Quintin Van Ackeren worked a perfect eighth inning, striking out one.

Key Northwest Innings
- With one out in the fourth, Figg was hit by a pitch. Hassman then doubled to deep left center to allow Figg to come all the way around to score the game's first run.  After an out, Handzlik drew a walk to put two runners on for Herrera. Herrera hit an RBI single to center, driving in Hassman to make it 2-0 Northwest.
