Softball earns split with UMD on Saturday


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University softball team split a Saturday doubleheader against Minnesota-Duluth in St. Joseph, Mo.
- The Bearcats (3-3) won the first game, 5-3, and fell in a tough fought second game, 11-9.
- In the two combined games, Erin Keeney and Kaitlyn Weis each hit two home runs on Saturday.
Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 5, Minnesota-Duluth 3)
- The Bearcats scored two runs in the third and three in the fifth. The Bulldogs had two runs in the third and one in the sixth.
- Northwest had five runs on 10 hits with four errors. UMD scored three runs on eight hits with one error.
- Weis was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs. She finished with four RBIs and two runs scored.
- Jaedra Moses was 2-for-4 and scored two runs
- Keeney went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the sixth.
- Karli Allen was 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Abigail Gilson, Sydney Brashear and Kiana Baderdeen each went 1-for-3.
- Rebecca Maher was 1-for-4.
- Taylor Blackford threw the complete 7.0 innings for the win. She allowed one earned run on eight hits. She struck out three and walked one.

Game One Key Innings
- In the third, Maher led off with a single to third. Moses reached on a fielder's choice as Maher was forced out. Weis followed it up with a two run home-run over the left center fence to tie the game, 2-2.

- With one down in the sixth, Moses hit an infield single to third. For the second time in the game, Weis blasted a two-run home run, this time to left. In the next at bat, Keeney hit a solo home run over the right field fence.
Game Two Key Statistics (Minnesota-Duluth 11, Northwest 9)
- Northwest scored four runs in the first, four in the fourth and one in the seventh. UMD scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the fourth and five in the sixth.
- The Bearcats had nine runs on 16 hits with three errors. The Bulldogs had 11 runs on 12 hits with two errors.
- Moses was 3-for-5 with a run scored.
- Gilson went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Keeney was 2-for-4 with a two run home run.
- Jessica Rawie was 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a double.
- Allen was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Weis was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, two runs scored and a double.
- Maher went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
- Baderdeen went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice

Game Two Key Innings
- Maher led off the first with a single to right and Moses followed it with a single to left. Weis reached on a fielder's choice as Maher was forced out. Keeney then hit her second home run of the day with a three-run shot to left. Rawie hit a double to left and scored on Gilson's RBI single to center.

- Baderdeen led off the fourth with a walk and Maher followed it with a bunt single. Moses loaded the bases with a single to first for Weis. Weis came through with a double to right center, scoring two. Keeney drew a walk and Rawie hit a double to center to drive in Weis. Gilson loaded the bases with a walk and Allen hit an RBI single to left to give Northwest an 8-3 lead.

- With one out in the seventh, Baderdeen hit a single to left. After a second out, Moses reached on an error by the first baseman. Weis came up with a single to left for the Bearcats' ninth run.

- Northwest will take on Minnesota State on Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo., in a double header starting at 2 p.m.
