Women's basketball holds off Griffons for win


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University women's basketball team defeated Missouri Western, 56-53, on Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
- Northwest improves to 2-17 on the season and 1-10 in MIAA play. The Griffons fall to 10-10 overall and 3-8 in conference action.
- The Bearcats led for the majority of the game and did not trail the entire second half after going into the break with a 24-23 lead.

- Tanya Meyer scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. She had a pair of three pointers and added an assist.
- Kaylani Maiava had 10 points and tied for the game-high with eight rebounds, including three on the offensive end. She also added a game-high four assists.
- Jaelyn Haggard scored 14 points with two assists and a steal. She hit a pair of three pointers and was 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.

Key Northwest Sequence
- With 42 seconds remaining, Missouri Western pulled to within one point at 54-53. On the ensuing Northwest possession, the Bearcats turned the ball over and the Griffons looked to take the lead with 38 seconds to go. After a foul on the baseline, Missouri Western looked to run a play on the inbounds. But an errant pass allowed Jaelyn Haggard to come up with the ball in the lane where she was quickly fouled. Northwest took a timeout to advance the ball into the offensive end. Before the ball was in-bounded, Kylie Coleman was fouled and calmly knocked down both free throws. The Griffons' last second three pointer bounced off the rim and the Bearcats held on for the win.
