Rally comes up short in loss to Lindenwood


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team fell to Lindenwood University, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.
- The Bearcats fall to 9-6 on the year and 1-4 in MIAA play. The Lions improve to 9-6 and 3-2 in conference action.
- Northwest scored five runs in the final three innings but were unable to overcome the early six-run lead by the Lions.

Key Northwest Statistics
- The Bearcats scored three runs in the seventh and two in the eight inning. Lindenwood had one run in the first, one in the sixth, four in the seventh and one in the ninth.
- Northwest scored five runs on 10 hits with three errors. The Lions had seven runs on 13 hits with two errors.
- Kevin Handzlik was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
- Garrett Fort hit an RBI double in the seventh and finished the day going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Logan Rycraft continued his strong weekend, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He hit an RBI double in the seventh.
- James Holler went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He had a pair of doubles.
- Jay Hrdlicka was 1-for-3 and was also hit by a pitch.
- Alixon Herrera was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
- On the mound, Anthony Caenepeel worked 6.2 innings in his fifth start of the year. He struck out six and walked one, giving up three earned runs.
- He retired nine straight batters early in the game, working three-up, three-down innings in the second and the third.
- Jacob Wagner finished off the sixth inning. He allowed one run.
- Jimmy McElwain worked the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. He did not walk a batter.

Key Northwest Innings
- Handzlik led off the seventh with a single to center and Hrdlicka was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. A double play ball moved Handzlik to third and Rycraft drove him in with a double to over the left fielder. Fort then switched places with Rycraft as he hit a double down the left field line that snuck inside the third base bag to drive in the run. Adams reached on an error by the third baseman and Fort came around to score for the Bearcats' third run of the frame.

- With one down in the eighth, Holler laced a double to deep center field. Handzlik grounded a ball to third but in an attempt to get Holler at second, the ball was thrown into right, allowing Holler to take third and Handzlik to move up to second. After a strikeout, Herrera took an 0-1 pitch down the right field line to drive in a pair of runs, pulling Northwest back to within one, 6-5.

- The third and final game of the series will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Bearcat Field.
