Volleyball drops tough five-setter to Griffons


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team fell to Missouri Western, 3-2, on Tuesday at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
- Northwest falls to 13-11 overall and 7-5 in MIAA play. The Griffons improve to 16-9 on the year and 10-2 in conference play.
- Maddy Bruder had a match-high 18 kills with 16 digs, two assists and a block.

Key Northwest Statistics
- The Griffons won the first set 25-22 but Northwest battled back to win sets two and three by scores of 25-18 and 25-17, respectively.
- Missouri Western took the fourth set, 25-16, and won the fifth,15-5.
- The Bearcats hit .243 for the match while the Griffons hit .219.
- Northwest had seven blocks and four service aces for the match.
- Olivia Nowakowski had a match-high 24 digs to go along with three assists.
- Morgan Lewis had 13 kills and four block assists, hitting .296 for the match.
- Sofia Schleppenbach hit .345 with 13 kills and just three errors. She had three blocks, two digs and a pair of service aces.
- Sarah Dannettell had 28 assists with five kills, three blocks and a dig.
- Maddy Ahrens had 22 assists with three digs and two service aces.

Key Northwest Sequence
- Holding a 12-9 lead in the second set, Northwest pulled away with a 5-0 run. Schleppenbach and Lewis had back-to-back kills to make it 14-9. Lewis and Hllie Sidney combined on a block for the next point and a Sunderman kill gave the Bearcats a 16-9 lead. A Griffon attacking error made it 17-9 as Northwest would not let the lead dip below four on its way to taking the second set, 25-18.

- In the third set, the Bearcats held a slim 16-15 lead. But a pair of Griffon attacking errors made it 18-15 Northwest, forcing a timeout. Lewis and Sidney combined for a block and Missouri Western hit into another attacking error. Lewis had a kill to make it 21-15, forcing the Griffons to take their second timeout. Schleppenbach then had back-to-back service aces to make it an eight-point match, 23-15.
