Volleyball defeats Washburn at home


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University volleyball team defeated Washburn University, 3-1, on Friday at Bearcat Arena in Maryville, Mo.
- Northwest moves to 12-10 overall on the year and 6-4 in MIAA play. The Ichabods fall to 14-8 on the year and 5-5 in conference action.
- Maddy Bruder had a match-high 19 kills and had 17 digs. She added two blocks and one service ace.
- Olivia Nowakowski had 29 digs in the winning effort.
- The win snapped a 14-match winning streak by Washburn in the all-time series.
- The Bearcats last beat the Ichabods on Oct. 19, 2010, in Maryville.

- The Bearcats hit .185 as a team and held Washburn to just a .136 attack percentage.
- Northwest tallied 11 total blocks to the Ichabods eight.
- Sofia Schleppenbach had five blcoks to go along with 10 kills.
- Sarah Dannettell had 24 assists with three kills and a block.
- Maddy Ahrens had three service aces and 23 assists. She had three digs defensively.
- Morgan Lewis had five blocks and six kills.

Key Northwest Sequence
- The Bearcats used a 5-0 run late in the first set to jump out to an early lead on the Ichabods. Up 18-12, Bruder and Schleppenbach combined on a block to make it a seven-point contest, 19-12. After an attacking error, Bruder came up with a service ace to make it 21-12. Sunderman added a kill to the rally and a bad set by Washburn made it a 23-12 Bearcat lead. Four points later, Northwest would put away the set on a kill from Sidney.

- In the fourth, the Bearcats jumped out early, scoring nine of the set's first 11 points. Washburn had three-straight attacking errors to begin before getting a kill to make it 3-1. An Ichabod service error and an attacking error made it 5-1 Northwest and Sunderman's kill on the next point forced a Washburn timeout. The Ichabods got a point right back but Schleppenbach tallied a kill and Ahrens recorded back-to-back service aces to make it 9-2.

- Northwest will host Emporia State on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. in Bearcat Arena. Admission to the match will be free following the Homecoming football game.
