Gotta drives in six; Bearcats split doubleheader


Story Headlines
- The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Christian Brothers University.
- The Bearcats won the first game, 11-2, but fell in the second game, 5-4.
- The two games were played at Nadicksbernd Field in Memphis, Tenn. The first game was nine innings and the second game was a seven-inning contest.
- Northwest is now 1-2 on the year while the Bucaneers improved to 3-1.
- Senior shortstop Nick Gotta had knocked in six RBI in the two games.
 
Game One Key Northwest Statistics (Northwest wins, 11-2)
- Northwest scored two runs in the third, one in the sixth, five in the eighth and three in the ninth.
- Christian Brothers scored one in the third and one in the fifth.
- Joeseph Hietpas got the win in game one, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing just four hits. He had four strikeouts and walked two batters.
- The bullpen trio of Jacob Wagner, John Osborne and Bryce Shea worked a scoreless four innings in relief. Wagner went one inning with a strikeout. Shea finished the seventh and closed out the eighth and ninth innings, allowing no hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
- Gotta was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two walks.
- Kolby Greenslade was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases.
- Ozzie Adams and Jake Lewis were both 1-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Adams had one RBI and Lewis drove in two runs.
- Garrett Fort was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He also stole a base.
- Jay Hrdlicka was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, a run scored and one RBI.

Game One Key Northwest Innings
- Northwest got on the board first in the top of the third as Greenslade hit a lead off double. Fort was hit by a pitch and stole second as Greenslade advanced to third. Gotta stepped up and hit a single, scoring both runners to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead.

- In the sixth, Hrdlicka singled with one out to score Adams who reached on a fielder's choice to put Northwest up 3-2.

- Northwest got out of a sticky situation in the bottom of the seventh as the Bucaneers managed to load the bases with one out. Shea inherited a pair of runners and issued a walk to load the bases. But he got a strikeout and an unassisted groundout to first to end the threat, keeping Northwest up, 3-2.

- The Bearcats scored five in the top of the eighth as Ozzie Adams doubled to lead off and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hrdlicka walked to put runners on the corners. Lewis reached on a fielder's choce, scoring Adams. Hrdlicka went to third on an error. After a pitching change, Howard reached on a fielder's choice, scoring HRdlicka. after Wulff was hit by a pitch, Northwest got back-to-back hits from Greenslade and Fort to go up 7-2, all with no outs. Wit the bases still loades, Gotta drew a walk to make it 8-2.

- Lewis opened the ninth with Northwest's first home run of the year, making it 9-2. Greenslade reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on an error. Fort reached on an error by the first baseman, scoring Greenslade. Gotta got his fourth RBI as he singled in Greenslade, making it 11-2.
 
Game Two Key Northwest Statistics (Northwest falls, 5-4)
- Northwest scored twice in the second and nearly came back with two in the top of the seventh.
- CBU scored twice in the first and added three in the bottom of the sixth.
- Austin Wulff was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
- Gotta was 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI.
- Lewis was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Fort was 2-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases. He was also hit by a pitch.
- Brad Roberts started, going 4.1 inings with three strikeouts. He allowed two runs on three hits.
- James Holler and Nick Howard each picked up an RBI. Howard also drew a walk.

Game Two Key Northwest Innings
- After the Bucaneers scored twice in the first, Northwest answered back in the second, scoring two runs. Lewis singled to leadoff and went to third on a Wulff double. Holler grounded out to score Lewis and Howard hit a sacrifice fly to score Wulff in the next at bat.

- With one out in the ninth, Howard drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Greenslade drew a walk and Fort got a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Gotta delivered a double to left field, scoring Greenslade and Howard to make it 5-4.
 
Up Next
- The Bearcats head to Jackson, Tenn., to face Lane College at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9. After that, Northwest will play at Henderson State on Thursday, Feb. 11 and then back-to-back games against Arkansas Tech on Friday and Saturday. All three games are in Arkadelphia, Ark.
