KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University had 22 student-athletes honored on the 2016 All-MIAA Football team which was released by the conference office on Tuesday. Northwest had nine first team All-MIAA honorees and also won a pair of the conference's top individual awards. Kyle Zimmerman was named the MIAA's Offensive Player of the Year and Adam Dorrel earned his third Coach of the Year honor.
Zimmerman ranks second in the nation with a 179.0 pass efficiency rating. He led the MIAA with 34 passing touchdowns against a league-low two interceptions. He compiled 3,056 yards on 231 completions. He set Northwest single game records for passing touchdowns (6) and total touchdowns (7) in a homecoming victory over Pittsburg State on Oct. 29.
Jordan Grove repeats as a first team All-MIAA performer in 2016, catching a team high 39 passes for 414 yards and four touchdowns. Offensive linemen Chase Sherman and Jamie Thieman allowed a league-low seven sacks and blocked for the conference's top-ranked scoring and total offense. Collin Bevins earned his second first team all-conference selection, recording 44 tackles with 10.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and 14 quarterback pressures. Cass Weitl recorded 58 tackles including a team-high 7.0 sacks. He had 11.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and five quarterback hurries. Jacob Vollstedt tallied a team-high 94 tackles with 13.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He had eight quarterback hurries, two blocked kicks and a fumble recovery. Kevin Berg picked off four passes and finished the regular season with 10 passes defended and six pass breakups. He had 36 total tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. Simon Mathiesen became the program's all-time leader with 53 made field goals on the year. He was 10-of-13 on the year and also hit 71-of-72 PAT attempts. Grove, Sherman and Bevins were all unanimous selections.
Earning second team honors was Phil Jackson II who found the endzone 11 times in 2016, eight coming on the ground where he ran for 730 yards on 113 carries. Shawn Bane Jr. caught 31 passes for 707 yards and 10 touchdowns, the second highest MIAA total this year. Anthony Lane broke up 15 passes and had 16 passes defended as a sophomore. He had 23 total tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss and had one interception.
Cameron Wilcox was named All-MIAA third team, rushing 89 times for 475 yards. His 11 rushing scores ranks second in the MIAA. Ryan Huff played in nine games on the offensive line for the Bearcats. Jarrod Bishop recorded 36 tackles in eight games. He had 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two passes defended and had one interception. Edward Richey had 33 total tackles with 4.0 tackles for loss. he picked off one pass and was credited with 11 passes defended and 10 pass breakups. he forced two fumbles and blocked a kick.
Six Bearcats earned honorable mention accolades. George Sehl caught 26 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns. Dre Washington also had four touchdowns, recording 27 catches for 341 yards. TJ Schieber had seven catches for 54 yards and one score. Defensively, Caleb Mather had 29 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and two blocked kicks in the regular season. Jack Young recorded four interceptions, defended six passes and was credited with a pair of breakups. he had 41 tackles with one coming behind the line of scrimmage. Marcus Jones had 19 total tackles with 1.0 tackles for loss. He had six pass breakups and six passes defended.
The Bearcats finished the regular season 11-0 and won its fourth straight MIAA title, the program's 28th overall. Northwest received the NCAA's Super Region Three top seed and will host a second round game on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m., against the winner of Emporia State and Minnesota-Duluth. It is the Bearcats' 21st playoff appearance and the 13th straight, the longest active streak in the nation.
