Volleyball splits opening matches of 2014

Story Highlights
• Northwest opened the 2014 season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-23) win over William Jewell at the Rockhurst Tournament.
• The Bearcats fell to the University of Findlay in the second match of the day, 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19).
• Miranda Foster finished the day with 27 kills and Jackie Becker had 20 to lead Northwest offensively.

Match One Key Stats (Northwest def. William Jewell, 3-0)
• Sophomore Jackie Becker led the way with 13 kills for the Bearcats.
• Three players reached double-digit dig totals, led by Aarika Wittenburg (12), Miranda Foster (11) and Shelby Duren (11)
• Northwest held William Jewell to just 11 first set points.
• Freshman Sarah Dannettell had 31 assists for the Bearcats in her collegiate debut.
• The Bearcats held the Cardinals to just a 0.67 hitting percentage and recorded six blocks defensively
• Northwest had just one attacking error in the first set.

Match One Key Sequence
• In the third set, Northwest jumped out ot an early 9-4 lead. But William Jewell came right back, running off seven straight points to take an 11-9 lead. After a quick timeout, the Cardinals got one more point before the Bearcat rallied to win four of the next five points to pull even, 13-13. Becker had two kills in the sequence as did seniors Lindsey Schlake and Kirsten Hudgens.

Match Two Key Stats (Northwest falls to Findlay, 3-1)
• Miranda Foster had a game-high 19 kills and hit .317 for the match
• Sarah Dannettell had 33 assists in her second game
• Foster was one of three players to record double-digit dig totals with a game-high 16. Bailey Vance had 13 and Shelby Duren added 11.
• Northwest hit .375 as a team in the third set to win, 25-18.
• Lindsey Schlake had three block assists. Jackie Becker added two block assists and a solo block.
• Becker, Duren, Foster, Dannettell, Vance and Kirsten Hudgens all recorded service aces.
• Northwest held Findlay to a .113 attack percentage for the entire match, forcing 26 attacking errors.

Match Two Highlight
• After falling behind 2-1 early in the third set, Northwest rallied to score 12 of the next 14 points. During the stretch, the Bearcats forced six Findlay attacking errors and got five kills from Foster to pull ahead 13-4. The Bearcats would not trail for the rest of the set, en route to winning the point, 25-18.

Up Next
• The Bearcats will finish the second day of the Rockhurst Tournament on Saturday. Northwest will face host Rockhurst at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. contest against East Central University.
