EDMOND, Okla. – The 8th-ranked Northwest Missouri State
Bearcats struck early and often as they overwhelmed Central Oklahoma 70-7
Saturday in MIAA football action from Wantland Stadium.
The Bearcats completed the rout to move to 5-1 on the season
and 4-1 in MIAA play. UCO fell to 1-5 overall and 1-5 in their first MIAA
season.
It took Northwest just 53 seconds to strike first as Trevor
Adams hit Tyler Shaw for a 61-yard touchdown strike down the middle of the field.
Adams and Shaw would hook-up again just over a minute later to make it 14-0 and
again in the third quarter.
Adams tied a Northwest school record with five touchdown
passes in the game, a record he tied last season. The junior finished the day
10-of-12 with one interception as he now shares the record with five other
players.
The Northwest defense was just as strong holding the
Bronchos to just 6-of-19 on third downs and picking off UCO three times.
Brandon Dixon nabbed the first interception –his fourth of the season – on the
Bronchos second possession of the game.
Brian Dixon and Nate DeJong would also add to the stout
defensive play for the Bearcats, each picking off UCO once. DeJong's
interception would come on the Bronchos' first possession of the second half to
open up a 42-0 lead for Northwest.
Central Oklahoma added its only touchdown in the middle of
the third quarter on a 17-yard pass and catch from Adrian Nelson to Sam
Johnson. The UCO offense sputtered most of the game averaging only 3.3 yards
per play compared to the Bearcats 8.8 yards per play.
Jordan Simmons added three touchdowns, one on the ground,
one receiving and one on a 90-yard kickoff return. The kickoff return for
Simmons was the fourth of his career setting a Northwest and MIAA record for
most kickoff returns for a touchdown in a career.
Northwest and Pittsburg State will clash next week at the
11th Annual Fall Classic in most likely a top 10 battle. It also will likely
mark the second straight year that one of the two teams will be ranked No. 1 in
the AFCA Top 25. Kickoff from Arrowhead is set 4 p.m.
