Central Missouri Survives Northwest''s Rally

Box Score

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Central Missouri guard Alex Moosmann hit a game-winning jumper with nine seconds left to give the third-ranked Mules a 65-61 win against Northwest Missouri State Saturday at Bearcat Arena.

It''s the 12th straight win for the Mules (24-1, 17-1 MIAA), who clinched the program''s third MIAA regular season championship in six seasons. It was the fewest points scored by Central Missouri this season, but it was enough to get its first win in Maryville since 2006.

Moosmann was 2-of-10 from the floor and had scored six points before nailing the jumper. Central Missouri made six second-half field goals, but made 10 free throws to hold off the Bearcats (12-13, 7-11), who trailed 41-28 at halftime.

Elijah Allen scored 20 points for the second game in a row, but fouled out with 45 seconds left trying to secure a rebound off a Central Missouri miss. Tremaine Luellen out-jumped three Northwest players to grab the board and made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 61.

Northwest guard DeShaun Cooper was too strong on a wide-open layup with 22 seconds left. Arunas Simanivius missed a tip and Sanijay Watts secured the rebound for the Mules. Moosmann drove the ball down the court, flirted with the lane and then hit a fade-away from the left baseline for the winner.

Edriss Floyd''s three-point attempt on the other end was off the mark and the ball went out-of-bounds to Central Missouri with 1.7 seconds left. Bryce Brunz was fouled and made two free throws to secure the win.

Northwest trailed by double-digits for most of the first half and faced a 48-34 deficit with 16 minutes remaining before making its move. Allen scored 11 points during the next six minutes, the last of which brought the Bearcats within two, 53-51. Allen has scored 15 points or more in 15 consecutive games.

Northwest had six possessions to tie or take the lead down the stretch, but couldn''t come through until Maciej Ustarbowksi took a pass from Bryston Williams and stuffed it with 1:20 remaining. The 61-60 lead was the first and only for Northwest. Allen''s foul and Luellen''s free throw followed.

Ustarbowksi had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Watts finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season, but was 0-for-4 with two free throws in the second half. Ryan Harris had 10 of Central Missouri''s 24 second-half points and finished with 13.
