MARSHALL, Mo.-Scott Roehl made two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to lift Southwest Minnesota State to a 47-46 win against Northwest Missouri State Saturday at the R/A Facility.
The Mustangs (3-1) ended the game on an 11-0 run in the final two minutes and 51 seconds to earn a season sweep of the Bearcats. Southwest beat Northwest 72-67 in the season opener for both teams back on Nov. 14.
Northwest (2-2) missed a three-pointer and committed two turnovers while Southwest scored 11 unanswered points. Jordan Miller converted a three-point play to begin the rally, then nailed a three-pointer on the Mustangs next possession to make it 46-43 with 2:08 remaining.
Roehl got a steal and hit a jumper that cut the lead to one with 1:24 left. He was fouled on the Mustangs next possession, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 19 seconds left. Trent Carlson came down with the offensive board - his first rebound of the game - and following a Mustang timeout, Roehl drew a foul as time was set to expire.
Donald Stewart had a final look for Northwest, but the shot was off the mark. The loss ends the Bearcats'' two-game win streak.
Allen''s game-high 20 points and Miller with 13 points accounted for the game''s lone double-digit scorers. The Mustangs made four first-half field goals, but led 18-16 at the break. Southwest shot less than 30 percent from the field for the game.
