MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State guard Girod Adams scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Bearcats to a 73-70 win against Truman Saturday at Bearcat Arena. It''s the first 30-point effort by a Bearcat since Hunter Henry totaled 33 points against Washburn Feb. 14, 2007.
Adams was 9-of-20 from the field, including two three-pointers. He was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line with 10 attempts in the second half. The Bearcats (8-6, 3-4 MIAA) finished 26-of-31 from the charity stripe.
Truman (3-12, 1-7) had four players score in double figures, but lost its eighth in a row. Tom Norton knocked down six three-pointers and led the Bulldogs with 19 points.
Adams scored 10 points in the game''s first seven minutes to push the Bearcats out to a 19-11 lead. But Northwest totaled three field goals in the final 12 minutes of the half - two by Adams - and led 30-28 at halftime.
Northwest flirted with a double-digit lead several times in the second half, but couldn''t shake the Bulldogs. Stefan Garrison made 1-of-2 free throws to bring Truman within one, 60-59, with less than three minutes to go.
DeShaun Cooper hit a jumper from the elbow on the Bearcats'' ensuing possession and the Bearcats scored six straight points to push the lead back seven. Northwest made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch and didn''t allow Truman an opportunity to tie in the final minute.
Elijah Allen finished with 16 points for the Bearcats, who''ve won three of their last four. Maciej Ustarbowski added 11 points.
