MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest forward Hunter Henry scored a game-high 21 points and had eight rebounds in a 67-46 win against Pittsburg State Saturday at Bearcat Arena. It''s the fourth win in a row for the Bearcats, who held the Gorillas to a season-low 46 points for the second time this season.
The Bearcats (17-6, 9-5 MIAA) swept the season series with the Gorillas (15-8, 6-8 MIAA) while at the same time securing its 17th straight appearance in the MIAA tournament. Pittsburg State has lost 10 of its last 11 games inside Bearcat Arena.
The Gorillas made three of their first four shots, and then made one of their next 14. Northwest outscored PSU 25-4 during an 11-minute span in between Gorilla field goals.
Lance Sullivan and Mike Larsen hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to give Northwest a 20-point, first-half lead. The Gorillas scored a season-low 20 first-half points and trailed by 17 at the break.
The Bearcats had 12 assists on 13 first-half field goals. Henry had three assists in the first half to go along with eight points. Eight of nine Bearcats had an assist in the opening frame.
Sullivan, the lone Bearcat without a first-half assist, got his on Northwest''s first possession of the second half. Pittsburg State never threatened down the stretch and trailed by 15 or more points the entire second half.
Cory Abercrombie, the leading rebounder and second-leading scorer in the MIAA, played much of the game in foul trouble and turned in his lowest rebounding numbers since November. He led the Gorillas with 13 points, but his five rebounds are less than half his season average.
Matt Withers more than held his own defending Abercrombie, was 6 of 7 from the field on the offensive end and finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Larsen hit two 3-pointers, had 11 points and four assists.
Andy Peterson saw his career-best, seven-game run of two 3-pointers or more come to an end. He was 0 for 3 from behind the arc Saturday, but had three assists and two steals.
Up Next: Northwest will play three of its last four regular-season games on the road, where the Bearcats have lost just once this season. Northwest takes on Washburn in Topeka, Kan., at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
