ST. JOSEPH, Mo.-Arkansas Tech overcame 29 turnovers by shooting 71 percent in the second half as the Wonderboys upset 16th-ranked Northwest Missouri State 66-62 Saturday at the Hillyard Classic hosted by Missouri Western State University. Arkansas Tech''s Chad Henderson led all scorers with 18 points.
The Bearcats (2-1) built several nine-point leads in the first half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Brandon Friedel pulled the Wonderboys within a point, 26-25, at the break.
The second half featured five ties and nine lead changes. Arkansas Tech (3-1) was 2-of-12 from behind the arc until Henderson and Friedel hit two in the closing minutes, which gave the Wonderboys a five-point lead. Henderson added a layup and Arkansas Tech led 61-54 with 1:42 remaining.
The lead was nine when Northwest point guard Ben Haarman hit a 3. He then stole the ball from Renard Allen and nailed another trey to make it 65-62 with 26 seconds left.
Allen was fouled with 11 seconds left and made 1-of-2 free throws. Northwest missed a 3 on its final possession before time expired.
Shawn Carter and Mike Larsen scored 11 points each to lead the Bearcats. Haarman added 10.
Northwest was outrebounded 34-20, but had 14 steals. Haarman and Hunter Henry had four steals each.
