AT NORTHWEST
Michael Smith was named the seventh head women’s basketball coach at Northwest Missouri State University in the summer of 2013.

In his first season, Smith had a pair of All-MIAA performers in Ariel Easton (third team) and Annie Mathews (honorable mention). He also had 12 players named to the MIAA Honor Roll, achieving a 3.0 GPA or better during the school year.

Smith's second year as head coach saw Ariel Easton earn second team All-MIAA honors while freshman Tanya Meyer earned honorable mention. In addition, five of his players were listed on the MIAA Honor Roll.

PRIOR TO NORTHWEST
Smith spent five years at former MIAA rival Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. During his tenure at Truman State, the Bulldogs increased their win total each season and advanced to the MIAA Tournament the last three seasons. He helped lead the Bulldogs from the bottom of the conference with an 8-19 record in his first season to a 20-6 record in 2012-13, which included 11 weeks ranked in the WBCA Top 25 Poll.

From 2002-2006, Smith was the head coach at Moberly Area Community College, where he won 102 games and was named the Region XVI and District L Coach of the Year twice. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans, one WBCA/Kodak All-American and 15 all-region selections. He led the team to two national tournament appearances, in 2005 and 2006.

Smith had also served as an assistant at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock and at Angelo State. While at UALR, the team went 44-19 in two seasons. In his final year, the Trojans won the Sun Belt West Division and earned a WNIT postseason bid. Smith was part of a turnaround at Angelo State, helping the team to consecutive Lone Star Conference South Division championships in his final two years. In his last season at ASU, the team won the Lone Star Conference Tournament and participated in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

Smith earned his masters degree from Northwest Missouri State in 1998 where he served as a graduate assistant under former Bearcat coaching great, the late Wayne Winstead. He received his undergraduate degree from Central Methodist Univeristy in Fayette, Mo. Smith is married to the former Melanie Robinson and has two children, Cooper and Devin. The family currently resides in Maryville, Mo.
